JC Long Take Tracking Shot!

I think that's what they call it. You know any other movies that have long take? I can only remember two Hard Boiled and JVCD.

reply

I can't think of any other action movies that use one. I wish there were because it looks great!

"Tom yum goong" starring Tony Jaa

reply

mikesblast thank you, that was pretty good don't have to watch the whole movie for it :)

reply

it's really called a fluid master shot.

reply

yeah the list is sweet, but i can reccommend in children of man there is a longer much more impressive action sequence in 1 shot, the one on the battlefield with the tank and the building, this must be one of the best long takes ever in cinema history

Check these two movies out if you like long takes:

Running Time (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120042/)

Russkiy kovcheg (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0318034/)

reply

One of the most famous is the beginning of "Touch of Evil." I think Brian De Palma did one a while back, too.

Unless you're just looking for long action scenes.

reply

I'm not sure if this counts because its not really "action" but goodfellas has a great shot where they start from a car in the street and follow the characters to the back entrance of a night club through the kitchen all the way to the main floor. Its great!

The opening of the asian movie "Breaking News" by Johnny To is a very realistic shootout after a heist gone wrong all shot in one masterful take. It´s on Youtube somewher if you´´re interested in watching it.

Sarcasticly, I am in charge.

Touch of Evil, another one of my favorites which uses the tracking shot to perfection.

I also am reminded of another movie, a comedy, called Slacker which is pretty much filmed entirely in one tracking shot.

reply

BORN TO FIGHT has a good sequence where Dan Chupong is running around the village blowing away enemy soldiers - almost like a first-person shooter.

reply

There are 100s of films that use this type of thing but if you are talking strictly action then I think its Oldboy which has a great long fight filmed from the side in a "Streets of Rage" video game style, with the main character walking down a corridor beating up everyone in his way.

Doom has a similar thing with the POV shoot em up scene filmed to look like a level from the game.

You Only Live Twice also has a good one with the rooftop fight at the docks where Bond is being attacked by loads of thugs.

Saving Private Ryan also has a couple of good long master takes.

Terminator Salvation has the one shot Helicopter crash scene where Connor gets in a helicopter, takes off, is hit with a missile then crash lands all in one shot although this was done by hiding edits so was not technically one shot.

There is also a Hitchcock film, but I forget which one, which opens with a bomb being planted in a car and goes on for about 3 minutes with the couple who own the car getting in, driving around the town, being stopped at the border and then the car blowing up etc... all in one shot, its great!

Rope (1948)

reply

Rope was done all in one shot, but he was talking about Orson Welles' 'Tough of Evil'.

reply

Yeah that's the one, not Hitchcock, my mistake!

reply

It's an awesome filming technique which I wish was used in more movies, especially for action movies but instead it looks like were headed in that dreadful Jason Bourne style for most movies where the camera is super shakey and the the scenes are cut up worse than an MTV music video.

The French Connection is one of my favorite movies and they have one of the best chase scenes ever on film which is all pretty much one shot.

reply

There was a splice, but the opening sequence in Serenity was done like that. The first time I ever encountered the concept was in Hitchcock's Rope. The sequence in JCVD was just amazing. It's done a lot actually, but most people don't even notice. I can't tell you how many time's i've said, "you know it's been like five minutes since they cut?" and people were like "what? who cares." Morons.
