Absolute Masterpiece and an Oscar-worthy performance

This is a truly great movie with superb writing, direction and acting. Feo Aladag's debut proves she is a magnificent filmmaker with a big career ahead, and Sibel Kekilli is a revelation as the lead.

Well said Hobnobs. Truly an outstanding and extraordinary film. Definitely a touching masterpiece as you said. Wrenches one's heart and soul.

I just checked wikipedia and while Germany submitted this film to the Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film, it did not make the short list. The nominees ended up being (the first film listed was the winner):

In a Better World (Denmark) in Danish, Swedish, and English – Susanne Bier
Biutiful (Mexico) in Spanish, Mandarin and Wolof – Alejandro González Iñárritu
Dogtooth (Greece) in Greek – Yorgos Lanthimos
Incendies (Canada) in French and Arabic – Denis Villeneuve
Outside the Law (Algeria) in Arabic and French – Rachid Bouchareb

I did see Biutiful and Incendies, both were great. I prefer When We Leave to both of these films, however.

As for the acting, I felt every single performance was top-notch. Everyone was perfectly cast and did wonderfully with their roles.

Thanks for the info bootblack. Always interesting to read facts about how these foreign films did at the Oscars. I have often felt that there should be more categories in the foreign film department. It seems like so many good foreign films go unnoticed and unrewarded. So much talent thoughout our beautiful world of film.

I haven't seen Outside the Law yet, but I thought Incendies was clearly the best of the other nominees.

Dogtooth is terrific but way too offbeat to be an Oscar winner. This was a much better film than Biutiful or In a Better World (the winner).

I've seen a bunch of the other submitted films and would rank what I've seen something like:

Incendies
Dogtooth
Even the Rain
When We Leave
Carancho
Life, Above All
Biutiful
In a Better World
Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives
Of Gods and Men

But then again, the last two were big critical favorites.

But then again again, a lot of great foreign films never even get submitted. For the year in question, South Korea submitted a film called A Barefoot Dream, which has 126 votes here with a 7.1 rating. They passed over Poetry, which has 4086 votes and a 7.7 rating and is one of the great films of all time. Portugal didn't submit Mysteries of Lisbon, which is also a masterpiece. The aforementioned Of Gods and Men was France's submission instead of Certified Copy, a much bigger critical fave which I would put third among the films I've mentioned so far.

Prepare your minds for a new scale of physical, scientific values, gentlemen.
