Mija had such a dilemma.... (spoilers)

She truly felt badly for the young girl it would seem and also was struggling with the fact that her grandson was at fault. I think if the grandson had been more communicative she may have chosen differently. However, she saw that he was completely without feelings or remorse, he wouldn't even discuss the matter of the rape and treated his own grandmother like trash, someone he only had to deal with when he was hungry.

I was a bit confused by the ending, some said that Mija committed suicide as well and thinking back, it certainly seems like that was the case. The money she took from the man who employed her was merely to help the victim's family. She seemed sickened by the other boys' father's who only genuinely seemed concerned about their own son's future and keeping everything hush hush.

I found Mija's character to be strong in many ways, tormented and lonely. She was searching for beauty because it was so absent from the rest of her life.

I was also drawn to Mija's character as she had many layers to her personality. It was a tragic irony that as Mija was finally attempting to find beauty in the world via her poetry she was not only in the early stages of dementia but was being manipulated by the group of Fathers. For me it came across as symbolic as I remember what Mija's poetry teacher said about society's love of poetry will die out due to lack of interest. Relating this statement to the immoral actions of those around Mija Poetry by the end seems to state that beauty within ourselves and our environments is dying due to such behavior shown by the Fathers of the rapists.

"I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not".
