The safety pin

What do you make of the story she tells about the baby and the safety pin? Do you think it actually happened just as she says? And do you think she was right in assuming that that was the cause for his parent to leave her?

Further: when the director says he went to the father's house and the had moved, is he lying?

From what I briefly read, a large number of children were left parentless after the Korean War, and adoption has sustained at higher levels in society since the war.

So, with cultural context, we can dismiss the safety pin as the real reason for the girl being sent to a orphanage.
