Why is that the villian always has to be a cat

Can't they think of something new? You know, instead of this cats evil dogs good stereotype?

Is that something stuck from the medieval era, when cats are considered satanic? Gosh I just don't understand it. Dogs flip out and kill innocent people all the time. Never happened with cats. Yet cats are still portrayed in general culture as the evil, cape wearing shady conspiring bad guys who speak i n british/russian accent while dogs are portrayed as loyal, gung-ho, human-loving, all-american good guys.

reply

Now, living in a stray dog infested neighborhood, I hear horror stories about people being torn apart by dogs all the time. If a see a stray dog on the street, I do everything to make sure it stays at least 50 feet from me. But I can always be comfortable with stray cats, too bad there ain't too much of them anymore, the dogs are probably killing them off.

Because of this, the whole 'dogs are human's best friends and cat's are evil conspirators' charade never made sense to me.

So...I take it you are not a dog person?

Pricelss AND accurate.

You should see my two cats, furballs think they rule the house... well... maybe they do.

"That was a courtesy flush. I'm not actually done yet"

reply

Geez, that was really harsh. I know you want better media representation of cats, but that doesn't mean you have to attack the dogs. They haven't done anything!

I'm a cat lover who was also miffed about the "all cats are evil" theme in the first movie (although I found them the only real entertaining and funny thing in that awful film). But dogs, like cats, have unique personalities and are wonderful animals in their own way, and definitely don't deserve to be so put down upon.

reply

It was also explained in the first film. Cats ruled over mankind in Egypt a long time ago. Then the dogs saved em or something

reply

Dogs just follow orders because they think they have to do. Cats know they don't have to do it, they do what they want.

People think cats are dim because they don't fetch balls. It's because they DON'T WANT TO. Would you want to fetch a ball running after it like a moron? Cats know it makes them look stupid, so they don't.

In my opinion it's a sign of FAR more intelligence amongst a lot of animals. Except for Gorillas of course ;)

Brilliant post. I cannot agree with you more. I have 2 cats and I think they are far superior to any dog and most humans I know.

YES... I, TOO, WONDER WHY CATS ALWAYS HAVE TO BE E-VIL!? (My cat has trapped me in my basement, and is forcing me to write this! Send help! ;0)

There is also the argument that dogs have always been "man's best friend." Dogs also are said to eat cats. I know that wild dogs do but domesticated dogs that aren't owned by Micheal Vick, at least most of the ones I have met, get along fine with cats. In fact, in most cat and dog households I have seen, the cat is the alpha animal usually "protecting over" the dog even though the dog is sometimes three times as big. It has been proven: Cats are smarter than dogs, dogs are more loyal than cats. That is fact. Here is the big secret. If dogs are good and have to fight the evil cats at all costs, what do cats fight at all costs??? TOILET PAPER! It is the arch enemy of the cat. Dogs fight cats, cats fight toilet paper!

Thank you! Great post!

I mean I love them both, but I prefer cats so I will stick by what I said ;)

But it is true, I have seen cats and dogs live together just fine. My aunt's cat and dog get along fine, and my cat T.C will just grip onto their faces XD

Every dog I have met has tried to attack me, but all the cats I have met are sweet. To me, dogs are the real evil ones.

By attacking, I mean biting that requires massive amounts of stitches and surgery.

Do you normally laugh at the misfortune of others? I will never call dog's my best friend, especially when cats are readily available to fill in the spot.

Geez, what's with all the hate for cats or dogs? They're both great animals in their own way, and there will be nasty cats and dogs as well as loving ones. It also depends on the breed; I've never known someone to be bitten by a golden retriever, and ragdoll cats are one of the nicest and most affectionate cats around. I don't hate cats or dogs, but I do hate people who use individual negative experiences to generalize an entire species and insult others who like them (that goes for both qpwoieruafdfjzn and sarcasticbith)

reply

I have both a cat and a dog,and they seem to get along with each other pretty well for now.But i think i love my dog a little bit more than the cat for the sole reason that i can...you know, take it out for a walk. And you can't put a leash on a cat.

reply

Well you can put a leash on a cat, but then their true evil selves are revealed and they'll *beep* attack your ass and scratch it all to hell.

And dogs seem to really love their owners. A dog will cry when it's owner is not there. He/she will lay it's head on it's master's knee and gaze with love. When a cat looks at you, it looks like it's saying "*beep* YOU!"

Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion.

reply

Not true. My cats do better on a leash than the dogs ever have. Oh and if cats only say *beep* you when they look at you then why do mine always rush to greet me when I come home just like dogs do. Cats are every bit as loving and compassionate as dogs. I would say I should really know as I have 4 cats and 2 dogs. I love every single one of them even if all of them have bitten me at one time or another. All animals bite and scratch, it's their nature.

reply

Depends on the cat, actually. I've seen cats who happily take leash-walks!

And to emilyikuta--believe it or not, I saw on TV a statistical ranking of dog breeds responsible for the most bite incidents, and guess which one followed the German Shepherd and Chow Chow at #3? The Golden Retriever! Surprising, isn't it? :o

reply

Interesting. Maybe it's because goldies are more popular, so there's more bite incidents?

reply

Yes, it seems to be because their extreme popularity has led to irresponsible overbreeding and consequently some lines have issues with aggressive temperaments now. =(

I just spent a week in hospital having plastic surgery on my hands after a stray cat went batsh*t on me. Severed nerve in my thumb, tendon damage, and a bunch of scars. And I still like cats better...

Considering the adage is that guys are dogs and chicks are cats, it's obvious.

It's interesting that a blockbuster film would go out of the way to alienate a huge chunk of its potential audience (what with cats being the most popular pet in America). The trailers for the original created the impression that it was going to be a film set on a level playing field, with the audience more or less explicitly asked "which side will you be on?" So it's not that the finished film was anti-cat but that it was sold under false pretences.

"They ate Mummy! They burned Mummy and killed her and ate her!"

reply

Maybe it has something to do with the idea that a dog is man's best friend and cats have been associated with witches?

I agree that cats are always depicted as the baddies in films while dogs are always good and heroic.

reply

Dogs are generally thought of to be more gregarious (pack animals) than cats. Cats are more individualistic, so it seems more plausible (not that the premise is very plausible in the first place) for a cat to go rogue. If you remember, the villain from the first movie was a rogue cat also. It's been played up as a war between cats and dogs, but it seems to me to be more of a fragile truce.

If they went for a villain dog, then it would need to be a pack of dogs. I'd like to see that, but I'm afraid they would only play to...for lack of better terms...stereotypes. A chihuahua with a spanish accent, a german shepherd with a german accent, etc.

Villains often have certain accents because of the connotations associated with them. Russians are evil and powerful, germans are evil scientists, english are classy/refined but can be good or evil, canadians are polite, and mexicans are stoners. Its sad, but this seems to be the only way american audiences can identify who is good and who is bad.

I would say it's due to Blofeld.
