Anyone want to predict the ending?

I realize they must be way off the original book by now, but how do you all think it will end?

Well, I wasn't expecting it to end the way it did. Somehow I didn't like it, but Barbara made a mess of her life.

*********SPOILERS************

My father read the book and he told me that in it Barbara disappears. In the movie with Maria Felix she also disappears. We do not see it but are told by the narrator that she disappeared and no one ever knew what became of her. I think that it was good that the "novela" had her disappear as well. However, we do know what became of her. I liked the ending because it was the only thing she could do. She finally realized it was over between her and Santos and let her daughter be happy with him. I can't help being full of sorrow when I think what her life must has been like when she left. Everyone she cared about was either dead or lived far away. Whenever I remember the end and how Eustaquia and Melquiades came for her I get a knot in my throat and have to hold back the tears. The last 10 years of her life must have been very sad. She did, however, looK very beautiful with her gray hair pulled back. I also loved how when she asked Eustaquia and Melquiades if she was dead, Melquiades responded that only common people died. Legends like Dona Barbara live in the hearts and souls of the people who knew her.

That was beautifully written Cielo2001. I haven't read the book or saw the original movie with Maria Felix. I do think that Edith Gonzalez did great job in playing Dona Barbara. It did seem befitting that she left as if she'd stayed Barbara wasn't the type to just chalk it up and act with Maricela and Santos like nothing ever happened and be a dotting grandmother--that would have been too painful for her, so it was best that she left.

Despite that she didn't end up with Santos, in her later years Barbara was full of peace and content while living on and off at the mission. She was surrounded by children who loved her and had a friend in the missionary who also looked after her.

I know what you mean about when Eustaquia and Melquiades came for her. Barbara realized she had passed away as she was young again. And did anyone notice how she walked on the water on the way to the canoe where Melquiades and Eustequia were waiting for her? That was pretty cool.

I would have like to seen that her first love would have been waiting for her to be reunited with, but at least we were left that she said they were going with God and the Virgin.
