The ending ruined it - spoilers

I thought this film was well acted, good story with twists and turns, etc but for me the ending made no sense whatsoever - it was just far too convoluted and difficult to watch. i get winstone's character - he was clearly obsessed with her and willing to do anything. But why would he be willing to stab himself to death for her if she had just rejected him? why would she have become so sexually addicted to him if she thought of him as a fat ugly man? are we supposed to believe that she's willing to kill just to keep her riches? if so, i don't think we particularly saw any clear indication of that level of evil in her character earlier in the film - cheating on her boyfriend and a bit fake and materialistic but not exactly a killer. for me the ending ruined it.

I loved the ending. Although Anjita retained her life of privilege with the husband she thought she wanted, she will be unhappy. That's poetic justice. Regarding her relationship with the chauffeur, they were definitely in love but Anjita wasn't able to admit her love for him. She called him fat and ugly to convince herself that love between them was impossible. He understood Anjita better than she understands herself--he is willing to die for her, just as he was willing to kill for her. Is this the angle where you feel it fails to make sense? Because it isn't a modern approach to love? It's like a Greek tragedy where sacrifice is more commonplace than it is in reality. We hear far more about people moving from lover to lover than we do about lovers making the ultimate sacrifice for one another. If you need proof of Anjita's love, watch the camera zoom in on the bracelet he gave her when she enters the car with her new husband. Would she wear this on her wedding day if he meant nothing to her? I believe if she could have given up her boyfriend and accept the chauffeur into her life, without drawing suspicion or disapproval, she would have done so but the murder made it impossible. It was a no-win situation for them both. Remember, in the beginning she was sneaking around with her boyfriend without parental approval, and then she's trapped into the same situation with the chauffeur. Anjita is more or less doomed to unhappiness, and that's why I liked the ending. She will be a prisoner in that marriage just as she was living at home.
