I have to get something off my chest............

I was just thinking after I saw parts of todays VMA and I was thinking how I miss the old MTV awards from the 80's and 90's. Especially in the 80's, even though I was a little girl (born in 1982) I remember watching a MTV award show in 1987 somewhere and saw Madonna, Michael McDonald, Nu Shoes, Michael Jackson, and others. Its a shame this decade of music has went downhill. The award shows are getting worse and worse. Notice on today's award shows every host want to just give boring long speeches and I'm like get to the music please. Truly from what I remember on the 80's award shows it used to be all about the music and I used to love seeing the artists do their songs and dance to their songs. They would actually perform.

You're absolutely RIGHT! That's the difference between music of past and today's industry. It's no longer about the music ... just the business.

I grew up on MUSIC!!!! Not papparazzi, fashion, drugs, sex, media ...

I also think there's another element to the demise of music == and that's Radio airplay and technology.

DOES ANYONE REMEMBER when you could buy your favorite artist's CD and play the whole dang thing without having to fast forward through a bunch of garbage filler songs? Does anyone remember when you could listen to the radio and hear different artists and new songs off of an album instead of the SAME SONG FROM THE SAME ARTIST. Beyonce, Rihanna, Justin T, etc. are all okay -- but I would love to hear some different muic once in a while and not be FORCED into liking something because I have no choice what I hear on the radio.

Furthermore, I think consumers have gotten tighter with their dollars and are refusing to pay $12 for a CD when you can just buy the songs you want.

It really is a shame and MJ's passing made it all too real -- Real music era is over.

I think you all for you replies and you guys made some great valid points. Now Haterlicious I remember cassette tapes, I remember the record players because my dad had one and used to play it like he was a DJ. I like CDs I started buying CDs when I was about 12 I think the first CD I ever brought was Usher very first one. After that I just started buying and buying CDs like crazy and stopped after about 2005 because music started going downhill. Sometimes I'll buy something from the new artists but I have to download a few songs off of Limewire to make sure the album is worth buying. CDs has gotten alot cheaper and I really remember when CDs were overerly priced in the 90's.

To comment on the radio, I can't stand the radio unless I'm listening to Today's Hits and Yesterday's Favorites where they play old 70's, 80's, 90's, and today's music. Other than that I don't like the hip hop station same artists in heavy rotation (beyonce, Lil Wayne, and whoever else), very rarely the Pop/alternative/and R&B station.

It's just sad when a 19 year old (myself) thinks today's music is all recycled (samples and covers everywhere) and pure crap, that tells you how bad music is overall.

I stick to the 80's and 90's (even though I didn't exist in the 80's).

I love the 1990's. The 1999 VMA's have been the best IMO.

At least a 19 year old agree with us...lol.

Well, don't get me wrong, I do enjoy 00's music, but I mostly stick to the 80's and 90's, most of the songs on my iTunes is from those decades, and I enjoy watching VH1 Classic and the countdowns, it gives me nostalgia (weird cuz I didn't exist in the 80's and I barely remember the 90's lol).
