The Boy in Brother Cavils Church (spoilers)

At the end before Cavil kills the boy he asks what his name was the boy responds "John" I ask you this question, was there really a boy named John or was John a reflection of Cavil himself, the boy who his parents didn't want. (how he saw his makers in his eyes as Cavil referred to Saul/Ellen as Papa/Mama)

reply

John was Cavil's name according to Helen. In killing the his childhood self, he symbolically kills/rejects his own humanity. That's why no one is missing the boy, because he's a manifestation of Cavil, like a "head version" of Baltar and Six.

It's actually Ellen not Helen.

FFIW, the boy was cast because of his resemblance to young Dean Stockwell.

That was a shocking moment!

The last scene with the boy, I mean, not the casting. lol.

I was starting to like Cavil until he iced the kid.

reply

As it's been said the kid simply represnts Cavil's humanity. The part of him that still wanted his parents to accept him. In "killing" him he "killed" the last part of his humanity.

I lol'ed ^_^

For all of his rantings, he acts just like a spoiled child who doesn't get his way when he throws a tantrum.

Cavil is the ultimate hypocrite. He's a machine, as he so often loves to remind all of the other human/Cylons. He doesn't need to sleep or eat, yet he does plenty of eating, drinking, even frakking every single chance he gets in The Plan.

reply

I think the child was indeed meant to reflect Cavil -- but at the same time it was a real child. There's no reason the child couldn't be both.

reply

I think the boy was real and not an "angel" or anything.

The name John reminded Cavil of his hatred of his given name, John, by his creator Ellen, who's dad was named John. So he offed the kid, partly because of his hatred of humanity but more so because of his hatred at being reminded about being called John.
