so this ends on a major cliffhanger, to the point of there being no wrap up at all?
No.
Okay, well yes... it ends without an ending, and yet they give it an ending.
Here, spoiler to the ending of SGU, then I highly recommend watching it anyway, just because it's a great show:
The crew of the spaceship Destiny end up going into stasis. Eli, one of the main characters, does not just yet, because he has to set up another stasis pod to work for him. He doesn't do that in the finale. Instead, the show ends with the rest of the crew in stasis, and Eli standing in the observation deck looking out ahead into space as the ship travels at FTL (faster than light) speeds. Piano music plays. Eli smiles. There is hope. We know they'll continue to have great adventures, even if we don't get to see them. Then Destiny flies off, continuing its journey toward the end/beginning of the universe (universe as in the space-time continuum (which is
the mission)). And it fades. The end.
Basically, they gave it a very poetic, beautiful ending.
Do we know what happened afterward? Nope, but that's okay.
It's worth watching.
