Oh my, did this show have it in for men. (Spoilers)

1. Angel was bitten because a male let a zombie into the house (ignoring the instructions of a women). Angel was then un-tied just before dying by a male. (A female had suggested she be tied up in the first place.)

2. Marky thought it would be a good idea to stock up on oven chips (ticked off by a women) and then tried to shoot Riq despite Riq shouting out "I'm normal!" (A women was needed to stop him from continuing to fire). Marky also managed to cut himself whilst getting into the van which provoked one of the stupid and insane policemen into getting himself shot and then eaten.

3. Alex wanted to stay within the safety of the farmhouse but went along with Riq who himself was sitting doing nothing in the boat whilst she was working the river lock and so killed. Riq could not fix the car or creep through the house without knocking something over and he also couldn't understand any French. Riq then got himself shot dead completely in vain.

4. Patrick was horrifically obnoxious and selfish and destroyed the haven of the compound.

5. Joplin (Golumn) was pretentious, a pervert and described as acting like a nine year old. He also made the unbelievably daft blunder of opening the gate to the compound.

6. At the end Space did manage to close the shutters but it was all pretty futile by then. (And even then he needed a women to tell him to do it.)

Well that's all I can recall after the first episode which I can't remember because I saw it last October.

Of course no one notices such a negative portrayal of men because misandry is now the norm in our culture. Would anyone care to present a list of the female characters being equally incompetent?

Ye gods.

... possible redemption from the gloriously selfish and macabre Patrick. The dissection scene was excellent. Even his [Captain Rhodes style] ending was worthy of a chuckle.

reply

I forgot a juicy one... Marky was rubbish in bed and desperate.

There's a great book about this called 'Spreading Misandry'. It analyses loads of films and tv shows and argues that men are portrayed very negatively compared to women.

reply

I'd say that pretty much every character in the show had massive flaws, although not all were related directly to the survival situation. I mean all of the female housemates were portrayed as borderline retarded, and even Kelly (probably the least flawed character) was cheating on her boyfriend.

Seems to me that both sexes got an equally bad portrayal.

reply

That's a good book. If anyone cares to read it and take it seriously, it really sheds light on the bull-crap in popular culture with regards to how men are portrayed. Another good book is The Myth of Male Power.

reply

Written by an over-analyst, I assume. An over-analyst who really wants women to look bad.

What's all this shouting? We'll have no trouble here

reply

Well...it's not like I've not seen men behave they did on the show.

Look at the way women were portrayed - mostly bimbo's that were image obsessed so I think both sexes had their flaws exposed. Which is what this show was good at doing, like Big Brother.

How did you know to get out of a world gone mad?

The horror genre depends on strong female characters: always has, always will.

There's one simple reason for this, it's that terror is 'gendered' feminine. If you think of a victim and an aggressor, one naturally assumes the victim will be female and the aggressor male, hence, in horror the resolve is to have the female victim save the day and survive against the odds. In any case, the females in 'Dead Set' weren't a particularly appealing group; typical Big Brother bimbos and b***hes.

Misandry would never be an issue anyway, women tend to hate each other more than any man could for it to succeed.

reply

I can be quite militant at times but i didn't see anything wrong with this film.

The least flawed character imho was the main character's boyfriend.

reply

Bear in mind these aren't normal men- they're male big brother contestants, who are notoriously f uckwitted.

reply

Patrick is he only really logical one in this. He's a man. Angel asked to be untied, not caring what happened after she died. Also, Alex was killed and was a total bitch for the most part.

What's all this shouting? We'll have no trouble here

reply

Agreed, the men in this were either despicable, weak, useless, retarded or all of the above.

It would've been nice to have at least one male character that was upstanding, smart, and crafty in a crisis.

"6. At the end Space did manage to close the shutters but it was all pretty futile by then. (And even then he needed a women to tell him to do it.)"

Space needed someone from the production staff to tell him how to do it. As she was last surviving staff member left her sex had nothing to do with it.

Why am I writing this seven years after you eight years after the show aired? Because I had never heard of it until Netflix listed it a few weeks ago.
