He wasn't going to sit on his arse (and crap in a bucket) and wait until the place inevitably would be overrun. He knew exactly what was going to happen to everyone in there and what the living and thoughtless group of zombies would do to him if he didn't get out of there. As soon as he eyed the hapless Joplin, he knew how to manipulate him into helping.

Umm Joplin (sp?) was the biggest idiot of all. Ironic too when you note that he considered himself the smartest guy there.
