No that's a really shallow analysis.
'American beauty' about being something the society wants you to be, but in reality you're something entirely else, let it be: gay, apathy for material aesthetic furniture or/and social status. it's a movie that represents modern society; people are afraid to embrace the fact that they are individuals. In conclusion they should appreciate what they are/have.
And that is similar to 'The Joneses'
