Why the problematic children?

If the Joneses were to be the perfect family, then how could they afford screw-ups? We have a nympho daughter who seduces her 'father' then a married man in a yacht. Then there's the heartthrob who suddenly decides to come open and kisses his male friend on the lips.

They're good at what they do. Why does Charlie Sheen keep getting chances?

I agree If I were there neighbors I wouldn't be buying what they are selling based on their annoying daughter alone. It would lead me to believe their wealth was coming from a suspicious place. I am not talking about rl here of course.

The problem is that desire, the gnawing urge to buy something is often an unknown force that comes out of nowhere that we understand and just is. You can really dislike someone, but if you see something you like, it rarely rubs off onto the product ... in fact in a way, you can get back and them by buying the product and making it your's instead of their's - if that makes any sense. Human beings are irrational and illogical. Some human beings study other human beings and figure out how to manipulate them and take their money.

Yeah, I can see how a gay guy in high school would be totally counterproductive to their marketing agenda. He could be very successful selling certain stuff as an adult, but definitely not in school.

I agree about the daughter, but the son kept his sexuality a secret even from the company. But the daughter, I don't understand. If this is a job, why didn't her superior/boss (Demi Moore)report her or fire her? It was so important to maintain their secret identity, yet they hire a nympho ticking time bomb. And she even had a history!! They knew about her problems, that's why Demi was there to anticipate her moves and grab her by the ears to remove her from Fox Mulder's bed.

Can't believe she screwed a married man and came off as the victim in all of it. What did she think would happen, that he'd actually leave his wife for her - a bratty piece of meat?!

Happens all the time.

Hmm not always I don't think. Only the major idiots do, most of them - who have a powerful wife behind them, the ones who helped them be where they are today - would know better not too. Depends on what they want from life, if they want to remain wealthy and stay in that social circle then they'd stay with the wife and just have fun with the hot young ones.

I think it's fairly difficult to find qualified people to play that role (I don't think they were teenagers, but they have to look and act the part of the teenager and they have to be talented salespeople) and so they try and work with problem employees. This aspect of the movie was more to show what kind of people would work at a job like this. The nympho daughter and the gay son seemed to have a psychological reason for both pretending to be part of a family and emphasizing that it was all a charade. The daughter was likely the victim of either actual or pseudo-incest while the son may not have feel accepted by his family as gay. The mother was probably not much unlike them at one point, but I'm not sure we can say the same for the Dad.

Isn't that the entire point of the film ?? They (the company) have done this dozens of times, with dozens of "families" in dozens of countries and it went well, but this time it all began to unravel...because people are people with frailties and their own agendas and the "perfect" family is a myth.

I'm a Lieutenant Detective in, uh, Homicide. That's a fancy name for murder.

Try to look for adjusted teenagers - do they even exist?. Even more, for this case, we'd need teenagers from broken homes whose parents would let them do something this crazy, or slightly older people who would look younger, attractive, charming, charismatic, popular, successful. Then, build some seemingly perfect for them which are absolutely fake. Force them to show personalities they are not their own, let them perform 24-hours a day doing things they don't even probably like with toys they are not really theirs. Later, build some pressure for them with market quotas and sale goals. Keep the charade at all times, except when they're on their own at home, living with three other seemingly perfect strangers.

Yeah, sure, what can go wrong?

I think it was supposed to show that while they are actors playing a part in order to sell a product, they are still human and have their own problems. For the daughter, perhaps she did have a bad childhood and so she is drawn to older men. Because of this dysfunction she is not able to connect to someone her own age. Even to pretend in order to sell more product. With the son, it was difficult for him to get a girlfriend because of his own attraction to men.

It does show in the movie that Demi's character is having a hard time dealing with this and is considering replacing them.

Steve is having a hard time at first but then learns the game and does really well. But he still develops feelings for someone when he shouldn't be.

The Company is even willing to give Steve a new family because they can see that the rest of the family is bringing him down and he could do so much better with a better family. He wants to stay because of his emotional connections to his pretend family.
