question about Amber's dad SPOILERS

Why did he stop the car in the yard? It's bad enough he takes so damn long to decide to drive away. but then he only drives a few feet and then stops... it made no sense. everything would have been solved if he had just *beep* got out of there with summer. wtf was his problem?
