This movie sucks

Tooooo slow.

Infantile dialogue. Here's a sample: "Is this the place of absolute love that I've heard of?"

Poor wooden acting.

Did I mention - toooooo sloooooooow. You won't be able to stand it.

Manoel de Oliveira isn't for everyone. I find his highly reduced simplicity disarming and even frightening at times. I'm sure you're aware that he has cultivated this style FOR EFFECT. It isn't like he doesn't know his movies are slow as death. This is by design.

I loved Princípio da Incerteza, and Singularidades de uma Rapariga Loura was one of my top 3 movies of 2010. But this one is way too slow.

Uh-oh. If you lived through Singularities and thought Angelica was too slow, Angelica must REALLY be slow. I read the Angelica screenplay some years ago and enjoyed it. I've never seen Uncertainty Principle. Oliveira's best film is, for my money (and time), O Convento. A really bizarre treat. The Letter is also one of my Oliveira favs.

In Singularities he's trying to get the girl so there's a kind of suspens, plus the movie is only one hour long, and the girl is actually pretty cute too.

In Angelica, he just thinks and dreams of the girl for 2 hours. They don't even speak to each other (obviously because she's dead). It's just the story of a man obsessed with a dead girl, thinking about her all the time. It's like a Poe short story without any tension or surprise ending.

Are you fluent in Portuguese? I ask this because you can never trust translations. Sometimes they can be quite bad. I would consider that before blaming the screenwriter. I'm sure many writers and directors have groaned over incompetent translations of their films. Manoel de Oliveira is no wet-behind-the-ears hack who would callously let inappropriate dialogue pass.

Poor wooden acting.
It's an intentional style of formal acting (as opposed to a naturalistic style). It's not meant to simulate how people actually speak and emote.
