This movie sucks
Tooooo slow.
Infantile dialogue. Here's a sample: "Is this the place of absolute love that I've heard of?"
Poor wooden acting.
Did I mention - toooooo sloooooooow. You won't be able to stand it.
Manoel de Oliveira isn't for everyone. I find his highly reduced simplicity disarming and even frightening at times. I'm sure you're aware that he has cultivated this style FOR EFFECT. It isn't like he doesn't know his movies are slow as death. This is by design.

shareUh-oh. If you lived through Singularities and thought Angelica was too slow, Angelica must REALLY be slow. I read the Angelica screenplay some years ago and enjoyed it. I've never seen Uncertainty Principle. Oliveira's best film is, for my money (and time), O Convento. A really bizarre treat. The Letter is also one of my Oliveira favs.
shareIn Singularities he's trying to get the girl so there's a kind of suspens, plus the movie is only one hour long, and the girl is actually pretty cute too.
In Angelica, he just thinks and dreams of the girl for 2 hours. They don't even speak to each other (obviously because she's dead). It's just the story of a man obsessed with a dead girl, thinking about her all the time. It's like a Poe short story without any tension or surprise ending.
