Was she the only one to have sex in her school?

One thing that seems totally confusing is that Olive losing her virginity was seen as such a scandal right from the start. As if she was the only one who had sex in her school. It seemed unrealistic. After all, many kids have sex in high school.

However, I had a feeling it was more a comment on the "abstinence-only" groups. Seems like it was really strong in her school. Kind of a total difference to 80s movies. Back in the 80s, the cool, popular kids were the ones having sex before the others. In Olive's school, the most popular kids are the ones in the abstinence group.

Also, probably a case of people doing it but not talking about it, and she confessed in a public bathroom that she had lost her virginity to a one night stand.

In a school where popular kids are the ones advocating abstinence, well, it does sound like a scandal. And it only got worse when she started "sleeping around" (or so they thought).

Yeah I didn't believe that at all, especially in Ojai, California. I would say around 1/4 of the girls I went to high school with were sexually active.

It doesn't matter. I have worked in several places.... At every place I have ever worked most of the people were having sex..... But they still liked to gossip about others anyways.... It is just how some people are....

End of line

The story is obviously exaggerated. It's a retelling of The Scarlet Letter set in modern times. Unless the girl in question is one of those "no sex till I'm married" ultra conservative religious types, it wouldn't be a big deal that she has sex. However, once she starts the whole pretending to have sex with people for money thing then it becomes all about her image as a tramp/slut which is something that doesn't go away almost 100% of the time.

I don't think it's all that exaggerated. I went to a small Catholic college back in the 80s. I had a friend who liked guys and slept with a fair number of them in our social circle. But not at the same time and never with expectations of a longer-term relationship. It was all above board.

Another girl in the same social circle was all holier-than-thou about it and said some nasty things about my friend, but here's the thing--*she* was sleeping with just as many guys, even some of the same guys! In fact, she was in a rather ugly triangle with two guys at once that she kept going for a while. That was something my friend would never have done. And this other girl was a total hypocrite about it. If you didn't know her, you'd never have believed she was sexually active at all, from the uptight way she came across.

I knew another girl, who was a dorm-mate, who slept with a *lot* of guys. I think she had really low self-esteem and she also happened to be very pretty. Never a good combination. We were talking about it once and she mentioned worrying about getting pregnant. When I asked if she was using birth control, she was scandalized, insisting that she was a good Catholic girl and would *never* do that. Sleeping with half the school=good. Using protection=bad.

Late adolescence is a real learning curve in a lot of ways. Some people have some very strange views and values during that time.

I'm studying in a small Catholic college, and people think of me as a slut there because I'm not really a modest person.

It's because the movie wasn't supposed to be realistic, but a spoof of religious groups, gossips and the use of sex to build one's reputation. Also, eventhough gossip doesn't reach people to this extent, people that spread rumours still find amusement in it even when the story is nothing out of the extraordinary, just think about celebs and their dating life.

On side note, I don't recall the abstinence group being composed by "popular" kids, in fact, the most popular girl wasn't part of it. I just think that everyone knew them because of how annoying they were.

Where did you get the idea that the 6 to 8 people in the abstenance group were te popular kids in the school? I didn't get that feeling. Remeber when they were handing out flyers bar the begining? They were pretty much being ignored.

I strongly believe her friend Rihannon had sex, she seems like a slut. She even said "congrats, you're a super slut like me".

reply

But after declaring them both super sluts, Olive says something like "I don't think letting Joe motorboat you behind the gym qualifies you as a superslut." In other words, neither have had sex.

As for whether sexually-active students in that school were a rarity, consider the HS guidance counselor giving her little pep talk ("Do what ever you want. Get your freak on.") and then without even being asked, offers a handful of condoms. Clearly, sexual active students are the norm. What's unusual is that anyone talks about it so openly.

Also, she wasn't just "having sex,"she was "having sex" With the entire school.

That's what the rumor was. Sleeping with one person = not a big deal. But MULTIPLE guys at the school?? Of course she's gonna get a reputation. (Even though it was just a false rumor, but you get my point).

reply

Probably not, but she was likely the only one rumored to having sex with MULTIPLE people at that school.
