The supposed best friend Rihannon

I just got finished watching the movie and I wanted to know why was it necessary for Olive to apologize to Rihannon?

From the beginning it just seemed as if Rihannon was not a good friend. She didn't listen to Olive and basically badgered her into the lie that started the whole thing. She then went on to, I assume, gossip behind Olive's back, because she reported back some of the rumors she's heard about her. Rihannon even basically abandoned Olive and joined the mob that vilified her. I don't know, I just don't see Olive's need to apologize to such a 'friend'.

reply

Olive just wanted the fight to be over, so she held out a branch of herself (olive branch, get it? ) & apologized for lying.

"She then went on to, I assume, gossip behind Olive's back"

Okay, I will defend Ri on this one point - she may not have been gossiping about Olive, there's nothing to suggest she adds anything to the "Rumour Mill". People probably just tell her things or ask her questions because they know she and Olive are friends. Ri then reports back to Olive or asks her what really happened. So Ri doesn't "gossip", she gets gossiped to; if that makes sense.

reply

Yes, that makes sense, but I keep thinking about real life situations. It's hard to be "gossiped to" without adding something yourself. She could very well have defended Olive, but I doubt she sat back and said nothing.

reply

Yeah Rih was a pretty terrible best friend. Its one thing to be a bit loud and annoying like she was in the beginning, but then joining the hate mob and chanting and holding up signs to get Olive out? After that she didn't truly deserve forgiveness, especially considering she didn't even apologize! She completely betrayed a friend and did something incredibly hurtful.

I know Olive was trying to be sweet and forgiving, but I don't see why she's better with a crap friend like that, she'd be better off finding someone else. But I guess they had to end it was a nice little bow around everything.

Sorry, but this thread topic is silly. OLIVE was the bad friend. Olive lied to Rihannon because she didn't want to hang out with Ri's parents. Then Olive is getting drunk before a party and has sex with a gay guy and Ri had to hear about this from other people. Olive didn't even bother to tell Ri about that. Then Ri finds out that Olive is doing sexual favors for people for money. And Olive never told Ri that she was only faking doing these things. Then Ri sees Olive on a date with the guy that seems to be Ri's quasi-boyfriend. And Olive has the gall to consider Ri not telling Olive that she kissed Todd as equivalent to the implication that Olive was going to have sex with Ri's quasi-boyfriend.

Todd was understanding of Olive because he knew that she wasn't doing the things everyone in school though she was doing.

The thing about all that tho is that Ri never even asked Olive about what was going on tho. She just heard rumors & assumed they were true without even talking to Olive first. Why should Olive have to run her plan to help a friend out by Ri first? Then the whole pretend-oral-slash-physical-sex acts for money thing, again Ri assumed it true without asking. Olive was never going to have sex w Ri's crush, thus her slapping him in the parking lot, and Ri kissed Todd waaaay before that, never told Olive, & did it when she knew Olive still liked Todd. Furthermore a real friend would know none of this was true in the first place, just like told & the teacher knew none of it was true either. Bc they know Olives personality and didn't buy into the rumor mill like everyone else. Then joining the lunch mob just really pushes it over the edge.

Ri was a bad friend. No way around it.

Also, I don't think Olive ever actually got drunk, was just adding to the show.

And she lied to Ri about not wanting to go camping bc she didn't want to hurt her feelings bc she didn't like her parents... To me that's a forgivable white lie.

reply

I agree, Rihannon was not the best friend someone could have... a good friend will actually listen when you speak. She did NOT have an apology coming.

reply

Both were bad friends, but Rhiannon was already extremely annoying to begin with. Why would someone like Olive even be friends with someone like that? The whole friendship was implausible if you ask me.

reply

I think it was them friends at a real young age playing together. As they grew older there personalities changed.I can't see Olive with now having a boyfriend and getting serious she would stay in close with Ri. Ri did she find kissed Todd after the room thing she had even knowing Olive liked him. Ri was Todds first kiss.

reply

I know, i didn't like the fact that she still wanted to be friends with her in the end.

Ashmi any question

reply

Apologizing isn't the same thing as still wanting to be friends. I'm pretty sure that friendship was over. Olive just wanted to move on & make peace.

reply

I don't think so, seemed to me like she was taking the first step. Obviously it wouldn't have been long until they were back to being buds again, although maybe not best buds this time.

Nah, that friendship was toast. That's why Rhi looks teary at the end--she realizes what bridges she burned.

I didn't get that impression at all and I'm sure most peopled didn't either. She would also be teary if she realized she was a complete asshat to her friend. She realized she was in the wrong.

reply

She was a terrible friend.
