New 'gold' from Brazil?

Cidade de Deus,Tropa de elite,Cidade dos Homens,Meu nome nau e Johnny...is this next in a row of marvelous brasilian movies -Ultima parada 174?I just watched trailer and it looks interesting.I've heard this will be brasilian candidate for Oscar. What is your opinion about the movie?

reply

I firmly believe Brazilian cinema can and should offer something less focused on violence.

reply

That is the point. I don't deny that these are really good movies, but we have such more good things and talent to do better.
I can give one example.. A maquina!

I'm tired to see violence in the screen, we should see hope and happiness. That's the real face of Brazilian population!

I am sort of sorry to see Ultima Parada 174 being propped up as a possible Oscar entry for the reason of its topic of violence. I have not seen it yet that's why I put the "sort" of in there. (One might watch Ominbus 174 the documentary I did see) as it will give you a primer before watching Ultima Parada 174. I am glad that it is being promoted with positive reviews but I agree that Brazilian Cinema has more to be known for than the violence & poverty topics so focused on in films like Cidade de Deus,Cidade dos Homens and Favela Rising. I was very saddened that the film Antônia - O Filme, from a couple of years ago, did not get the kind of coverage/marketing needed to present a different side of Brazilian Cinema to the world.

A Maquina is a beautiful brazilian movie. In fact, my favorite br movie. I'm Brazilian and I feel ashamed that the "best" of our productions is hyped-up violence.
So... I agree with you. And I recommend A Maquina to whoever is curious about Br cinema :)
