Great story with great potential BUT...

...the style of this movie detracted from its ultimate potential.

Specifically:

- MTV music video production style (music genres and camera work that gets TOO creative and distracts from the story)
- cheesy/corny lines (bad and comedic dialogue confuse the audience - is this a comedy or a drama?)
- horrible sound effects and action sequences (slapping and cartoon punch sounds?)
- completely out of place sound track tempo and volume at times (again, totally distracting)

The thing is, I liked this movie. But I wanted to LOVE this movie - for the message it delivers. It is refreshing to see a movie - any movie really - that ignores an obligation to be politically correct and refuses to pander to a faux non-conformist crowd of Hollywood.

Maybe this movie was made in a style unique to the Indian movie scene and culture but as an American I found the movie somewhat disappointing as a result.

Also, the 8.7 rating is a bit high but I can understand why so many Indians who love their country and are sick of the terror attacks would find this movie profound. I imagine it speaks to them and FOR them - the common men and women of India.

Another ignorant Westerner. Do you have any idea how patronizing your comments come across?

Keep your comments confined to the movie.

Yes every body is sick of occupations, riots, illegal wars, all leaders who provoke occupations must be killed in this manner as shown in the movie.

Before I say anything, I'm gonna make it clear that im not a stupid "westerner" or whatever, im an Indian. Alright, now...my two cents.
Yes, I liked the movie, a lot actually. The story was indeed very, very strong. Nasseruddin Shah and Anupum Kher were spectacular in the movie, and so were the supporting actors Jimmy Shergill and Aamir Bashir. But, alas, I could not help but see certain "flaws" in it, which, whether you're an Indian or a foreigner, you will make out eventually while watching it.
First, the soundtrack was reeeeeallly outta the place. Building tension is one thing, banging those gigantic drums....well c'mon, this isn't the early 90s anymore. You don't HAVE to direct our minds to the "intensity" of a scene, minimal and impactful effects can suffice.
Second, the cops were taking orders in a way superficial manner (ask a cop, you'll know.), they din't have to salute to Kher every 10secs....Jeez!! Overacting there!!
And there was a small storyline which doesn't make sense to me somehow. Yes, im talking about that "Wimp actor" bit. I know what it's about and whatever....but somehow, it seemed unnecessary to me. But maybe that's just me. So don't flame me for it.

But, still, all these flaws cannot overpower the fact that this was a very STRONG movie. Why im saying this is because that's the first word that came in my mind when the movie ended. The last time I felt like this were in movies like Schindler's List, The Pianist etc. (not related to the story in anyway BTW.)...but strong.
THUMBS UP! India is certainly on the right track now when it comes to films now!!

Its funny how you go on labelling Indians or any other nations citizens as patriots yet most of the time its been you guys who have been voting every other good for nothing movie with your american patriotism or whatever ,we could have said the samething about the vote rigging which happened with "Dark Knight" just because an actor died.C'mon now thats just you guys being sentimental.

reply

Umm...no, The Dark Knight was rated high because it was a good movie. It was Heath Ledger's performance, not his death, that helped the positive voting for that film.
