This should've been Claire Daine's Oscar winning role.

If this movie was released in theatres and not just an HBO exclusive, Clair Daines would've won the Oscar for Best Actress.

Well, crap, I should read before posting.

I said exactly this. She was superb.

Yeah, I always feel kinda bad when HBO churns out their spectacular made-for-tv movies and then gyp everyone of potential oscars.

Emmy's are so cheap and stupid these days (I mean, reality tv show hosts have their own goddamn category these days!) that it means so little compared to an oscar. At least in my opinion.

Of course, having said that, few hollywood productions ever reach the level of HBO. Which is weird, but true. So I'm definitely glad HBO does them, because they do them well!

This is a true statement, unfortunately.

I am a fan of theatrical movies (vs. TV) and have been watching them for over 36 years, but I can no longer defend Hollywood, when people say they've been churning out garbage for the last decade or so. Because they are right.

We DON'T see many movies with the quality "Temple Grandin" has in movie theaters anymore. All we get are lame remakes and movies aimed at 13-year old boys based on video games, toys, comic books, etc. These movies are all flash and absolutely no substance.

Hollywood does not make good movies anymore... Unless you look to cable TV and smaller independent productions like HBO, Showtime, etc.

The worst part is with the bad economy not improving any time soon it only looks to get WORSE.

I know what is coming out in 2011, and 2012, and a majority of the titles don't tackle any serious subjects like "Temple Grandin" does (did). It's one thing to want to allow people to escape, but it's another to completely shift a major component of the industry (theatrical movies) that reaches more people worldwide than any other to mindless drivel that often ends up in multimillion dollar failures rather than produce movies on modest budgets with real talent that have real stories worth telling like "Temple Grandin".

I completely agree. It wouldn't have been a blockbuster but as an indie film she definitely could of won!

Just saw this on HBO and it brought tears a couple of times. Everybody talks about Danes' performance which was wonderful, but what struck me was that ALL of the supporting actors were wonderful too. It was exceptional casting and acting for a "TV movie" and both HBO and Jackson deserve huge kudos for bringing it to the the public.

As others have noted, mainstream Hollywood is a morass of "me too" pictures that are created, packaged and marketed all on formula. The indies fill some of the gap, but HBO is making top-notch films as well as series and they have my highest respect for that.

That's part of why it wouldn't be released in theatres. It's a great movie with excellent performances, but the subject matter is not one that is easy to market. I certainly wouldn't be rushing out to theatres to watch it if I saw a trailer or poster, but on HBO, I would.
