Set in Toronto?

Okay, this is bugging me, because the show wants us to believe that it is both Toronto and could also *possibly* be in the US, because obviously Americans won't want to watch a Canadian show. Whatever! This is a good show and it should be proud to be Canadian instead of "skillfully" hiding the CN Tower behind trees or whatever.

Its because the city of Toronto would not give permission for 'The Bridge' to depict the setting as Toronto. The show is too controversial. The main character is based on the life of the former union leader of the Toronto police department. Alot of the things in this show are based or 'loosly based' on true events that happened in Toronto ... corruption in the brass and government. Hence the city would not give permission to the show to depict Toronto as the setting... They were not trying to hide anything, they would have been sued if they had done otherwise.

That union leader was extremely controversial.

Anecdotal reports described him routinely driving difficult, mouthy captives to deserted parking lots for extrajudicial beatdowns. Do I know those reports were true. No, not for a certain fact.

Under his leadership the union maintained a political slush fund, to oppose the election of municipal politicians they thought were enemies of the Police. They hired telemarketing firms to sell bumper stickers that said something like "I support my police". The telemarketers would hint sporting one of those bumper-stickers would help reduce or eliminate traffic tickets.

There's another Canadian television series called Flashpoint that has aired in the States and got some positive attention.

Have to say this is the first Canadian show I enjoy. I've tried watching others...all genres...never could get into them. Especially the comedies. It's like some weird sense of humor I don't get.

reply

Yes we do have a different sense of humour. I don't know how to define it exactly. It's like a cross between American and British humour, but maybe more British.

they wanted it to be in any city in north america, just incase it got picked up by the US networks.

there are so many good shows that are made here that should be picked up, it's such a shame that they are not....most of them go over quite well in european countries....

I loved Cold Squad. Flashpoint is really good too. I can get into this show as well.

Perhaps Canadians and Americans have much more in common than people admit. We don't need to wave U.S. flags in U.S. Tv shows so why do Canadians have to play up the fact it is a Canadian program?

When American TV shows are set in U.S. cities what shows up on screen in often an exaggeration of how those cities really are.

It seems we in the U.S. have to play up the fact our shows are set in the U.S.

as an american i could really care less where the show is made. i just want to watch a quality show. i think that this show is really good and i want to see more.... but if it's going to be set in toronto or vancouver i would like to see some winter scenes ( im picking on shows like warehouse 13..... set in north dakota and it's always sunny and warm there)

The fact that you asked that question proves that you know little about Canada.

I disagree. I actually LIKE shows like Flashpoint and, before that "Cold Squad" and "DaVinci." It gives us Americans a different slant on how to approach crime and punishment. With all the rain in the episodes I've seen of The Bridge, I thought it was based in Vancouver, not TO. BTW, I think Rookie Blue is a stupid show, regardless of where it's set or filmed.

reply

What do you dislike about Rookie Blue? I have only seen the pilot episode, but it didn't catch my attention enough to want to watch another episode.

reply

I don't like Rookie Blue because the characters are too typecast and the acting just stinks. I really hope The Bridge gets better ratings in the US, but I also think it would be better-suited on cable, like "The Shield."

better suited on cable?

I think that most of the shows on SyFy are shot at The Bridge studios in Vancouver.

reply

hugh...not getting that last part...the bridge studios in vancouver...it's not shot there.....it's done in toronto....in fact, i was even in one of the places where an eppy was shot..i recognised it right away.....so.....lol..not getting that part..

the bridge isnt' supposed to be about toronto......yes it's shot here, but it's about any american city......more or less..

It says here that the Bridge is 'loosely' based on former Toronto police union head Craig Bromell. In fact Bromell is the executive producer. But like someone before said they don't want to make it obvious.

reply

that's right...it is supposed to be based on him..

I've only seen the first episode, but this is what I saw: After Leo gets in the car with the IA officer (after the funeral) they show a shot of the city's skyline and you can see the CN tower. Later, during the chase of the pickup truck, a speed limit sign in a suburban neighborhood says "40". There is no way that it is 40 MPH in a residential neighborhood, but 40 KMH is approximately 25 MPH. Also, the $5 bill that Leo handed to Abby had a hologram on it like a CND.

anyone who cant tell this show is canadian and is from north america, is a fool.
first of all, they show canadian money dozens of times.
the street names? all toronto streets.
the shows story is based on the corruption in the toronto police department, specifically downtowns 52 division.
the police chiefs son was one of the accused in real life, and in the show.

the show has already been killed anyways.

someone said something about americans not showing american flags and the like in american show.
apparently im watching a different tv, or your all not paying attention.
outside of every courthouse, police station, etc, in every american show, there is american flags, everywhere. just like in real life.

its sad that someone would think they tried to edit out the appearance of being in toronto. they clearly state it several times in the show, pizza pizza is shown in an episode, a pizza place only found in ontario.
they mention the dvp, and the 401 highway.

people are so damn dense.
