Aliens: Colonial Marines looks like Aliens, and sounds like Aliens, but unfortunately it just doesn’t feel like Aliens. Instead, it feels indistinguishable from almost every shooter you’ve played in the past twenty years. There are some feelings of nostalgia to be enjoyed, but it soon wears off and all that is left is some bog standard run ‘n’ gun action that brings little of note to the FPS table - and it suffers from a severe lack of optimisation on PS3 and 360. Aliens: Colonial Marines has definitely been crafted with a lot of love for the franchise, it just needed a little more imagination - and a hell of a lot more polish.

Too bad most people, such as yourself, judge a game just because a stupid website bitches and complains that it didn't live up to its expectations. Such a damn shame. This is a pretty solid game. I have never, nor will I EVER read reviews online about games, I'll rent it myself and form my own opinion. 100% of online reviews are totally biased.

When over 10 gaming review sites, including the multitude of player reviews that were posted as well, keep saying the same thing over and over again and it gets an average score of 4/10, I'll save my money until it's in the cheap bin. I'm not spending $50 of my money on something that the vast majority of those who've played and reviewed it says it's no good.
Still not going to listen to them. I'm not on any bandwagons. Plus, rentals are a great investment. You save so much money. Buying a game these days is totally pointless if you're only going to play the campaign. Multiplayer is no reason to buy a game. It's stupid.

I definitely plan on playing it no matter what. If anything, just to see the new world that's been created. I'm mostly disappointed that it didn't just get rave reviews. Moderate to good reviews would have been fine. But when review after review says it's just bad, it's really difficult not to think there's a reason for it.
I'm just not going to rush out and check it out, or have high hopes for it.

Mediocre games can often be much more of a letdown than downright laughably bad games. Especially when you're dealing with a game that's based on a highly popular franchise and which people have been waiting for for years.

I bought the game last night and am going to start playing tonight if I have time. It is too bad about the harsh reviews considering how damned long it took to make this game. I have a game magazine from 2007 talking about this game. Its just coming out now. That is a LONG time to be developing a game and even worse to have such mediocre to bad reviews. But they are lucky with me because I like to form my own opinions. Its okay to read reviews, but if you are really into something like I am with Alien its a good idea to try something yourself and then form your own opinion.
I'm not making excuses for the game but I think it has to do with Sega. This game started production back in what, 2008? Then I remember reading it was put on hold so they could make the AvP game. The AvP game was rushed out before it was even finished. The graphics looked sharp in some sections, weak in others, but the multiplayer was total mess, and I think it was less than a year before they shut down all dedicated servers for the game. It appears they've done the same thing with Aliens: Colonial Marines. Pull it off the shelf and then rush it to completion before it's finished. Both produced by Sega but developed by different companies (Rebellion did AvP, Gearbox did A:CM) so the common denominator would be Sega.

Brian, Hi, I read up on the game since it's launch it seems that Gearbox was focusing more on Borderlands 2 than this game (SEGA was rightly pissed) and they even outsourced the game to a few other studious (wth?). They (GB) got it back and it was in a horrible state (outsource company had binned all the stuff from the E3 trailer etc.) so GB had to rush remake it and pump out asap after putting off SEGA for so long!
At least thats what I gather from the interwebs threads I read about it!
The above is not gospel but seems legit. But still GB putting the game off for over 5 years lol, thats some professional stalling right there.
As I said in my previous post, it seems Sega really wanted to rush out AvP and then pulled support for it just a few months after it launched. So I just assumed something similar happened with this one.

Honestly, the original 1999 Aliens Vs Predator game is the only one to get it completely right. To this day it's still one of my all time favourite games. When it came out I almost wept at how amazing it was lol I actually still play it. You can get it on Steam for like 4 bucks now and they updated it to work on modern computers. I'd love for them to do a strict remake of it. Don't change anything but update the graphics and maybe add a few levels.

I dunno...I enjoyed avp 2. graphics were way better, cutscenes, characters, and all that...but I felt it really lacked the atmosphere of the first game. But that's just me.

And I think I will, does it run well on the current windows? I ask because avp gold was a bitch to get running on windows xp back in the day, so much so I could only get it working if I played it on gamespy's serves, in which case I couldn't save.

I agree 100%. I still play that game. Its the only one to really get all the characters right. Its the only one to have the alien actually be lethal and capture how dangerous the acid blood is. All games since cut back on the aliens abilities for some reason.

Nah, what happened was, Sega signed a contract with Gearbox to do an FPS based on Aliens. Announced it, everyone was happy. Then they announced AvP which Rebellion were doing would be out first. Gearbox then put Aliens on the backburner & did their own game, Borderlands, which proved to be a hit.
Then, when they should have been fulfilling their contract to Sega & concentrating on Aliens, they decided to do Borderlands 2. It's their own IP so it makes them more money after all. Contract be damned. Then they inexplicably decided to buy Duke Nukem Forever & attempt to finish that for a release, presumably as they saw dollar signs & figured it would take little effort. So they've now got 3 games on the go. 1 of which is owned by someone else, 1 of which is their baby & 1 they've bought just to throw together & get some money out of.
So they outsourced development of Aliens to someone else, crapped out Duke Nukem (which is awful beyond belief) & concentrated on making Borderlands 2. They showed a 'gameplay demo' of Aliens at E3, & everyone got excited because it looked exactly like the game fans had been waiting for. Unfortunately, it wasn't a real gameplay demo, it was a massive lie, designed to make it look like they'd actually done something.
So they're finishing up Borderlands 2 & Sega are, understandably, wondering what's happening with their game. So they negotiate a delay with Sega to 'polish up' Aliens for release, & then use much of that time to actually polish up Borderlands 2. Once that's done, they get Aliens back from Timegate, the company they've outsourced it to... and it's a mess. They don't have time to fix it, as Sega rightly want their game in stores so they can finally actually get a return for their investment.
So they basically did a Duke Nukem on it. Take unfinished parts, stitch them together as best they can, throw it out there & hope for the best. And it shows. Some parts look decent, others are extremely basic, the AI doesn't work as it should, the lighting system has been simplified so it looks flat & dull, the storyline is a mess & it's full of bugs & glitches. Gameplay is the most basic fetch quest, push button, shooting gallery nonsense with none of the desperate sieges we were promised. It's a poor man's Doom 3 basically.
And all just to get something remotely playable out of the door to avoid Sega suing them.
Well that sounds believable. Sega should still sue them for the game lol. Order a massive recall, give everyone vouchers, give the game to Rebellion, have them re-do it, then re-release it calling it "Aliens: Colonial Marines - We're sorry."

Recall? We should all get a damn refund! For the game and season pass I foolishly pr-ordered! It was blatant false advertisement and if it were any other business regulated by the government, they would have been fined and have their license revoked! As is, the state of this game is only 75 percent and I don't think any amount of patches can salvage this train wreck. I also don't think outraged buyers who felt cheated will let it rest and some legal action will result out of this debacle.
Clicks on the page for this game, sees that the rating is 6.4, after YEARS of hearing about it and anticipating it, watching countless interviews about how much love and care was put into the game, and thinking it would finally be a good alien game since AVP2 in 2001, after ALL that time, the big reaction is:
"That awful Aliens game is actually cannon?!" "I completed the entire campaign in half a day" "Glad I didn't pre-order " "The dialogue is cringe worthy and the gameplay is totally forgettable."

That's a fascinating yet tragic story, and I believe it.
So it turns out the reason it took so long to release, WASN'T because they were making it better and better, but they were actually working on other games while THIS, the Aliens game was outsourced to some talentless first-year game designer students and shat out, late, yet too soon.
Very profound, I officially hate SEGA now, how could they do this to Aliens, leave it with some bunch of poeple who aren't even that talented ? The franchise is long overdue for an outing that meets it's potential, but once again, somebody has fumbled the ball.
Sad thing is, they COULD have so easily made it good, but they were careless and gave it to someone with less capable hands. What b@stards.
I can forgive a dated engine/effects/technology in a game like this. It happens when a game has been in development for this long. At some point they *have* to go with a certain level of technology and when development takes too long, chances are said tech will be outdated when the game comes out. You can compensate by atmosphere, level-design, "creepyness-factor" and by the simple fact that this thing is set in one of the coolest fictional universes ever. No biggie.
What I can't forgive is bad writing/storytelling and outdated gameplay. That stuff has nothing to do with technology making a leap forward while you're producing your game.
A great story could've made this title great even if it had been lagging behind in tech. Same goes for game mechanics/gameplay. Why not take the obvious route and make this a squad-based shooter? Introduce different classes.. I mean: The film practically already invented most of the stuff you'd need.
A tech-/electronics-guy (Hudson) Smart-gunners (Drake/Vasguez) Medic (Dietrich) Pilot (Ferro) Scientist (Bishop) Point man/scout (Frost.. could've been the only one equipped with a motion tracker). Grunts (everyone else)
Plus you could've integrated Gorman (CO) and Apone-types (XO) for multiplayer: Gorman could be a strategic commander who's bad at combat but good at directing the battle from behind the lines while Apone would be directing the battle on the field.
They did plan for that, but then a whole bunch of hilarious decision making occurred (read the articles from Kotaku) and they ended up having to piece together a game in the few months they had. I mean how much more ridiculous was it when you could place an ACOG scope on a pulse rifle? LOLOLOL.
