This is in fact a real documentary. It isn't a mocumentary, or anything? it is based on fact and not fiction?

So did he try to prove in any way that what he was seeing was real?

I believe he sees these things, but I think they're a function of his brain. The human brain is a mystery. Not to belittle his experience, but my opinion is it's an idiopathic blip in his brain chemistry.
