Ok, so I don't know about Norm MacDonald, but the term genius definitely can be applied to persons who are brilliant in different fields.

If Albert Einstein was a genius mathematician and scientist, then somebody like, say, George Carlin, could be a comedic genius.

It doesn't automatically lump the two people together.

What makes one a genius anyway? Is it a certain level of mastery of their particular skill or what..?

Would you say that Stevie Wonder shares many (or any) similarities with Einstein? I don't think I would. Now, could you look at me and tell me that Stevie Wonder isn't a musical genius with a straight look on your face?

Oh, I got Norm's act, it just wasn't funny.

Whenever someone says something like this, that means they didn't get it. It's like when people say, "I'm not scared of spiders, I just don't like them." Okay, buddy.

Logical fallacy. I could spend a paragraph explaining what Norm Macdonald was trying to do but I don't want to waste my time. I got it. Just like I get the joke "Knock knock who's there? orange. orange who? orange you glad I answered the door?" Oh I see. That's slightly amusing. Orange sounds like aren't you. I get it. It's just not funny. And neither was Norm Macdonalds failed act.

reply

That wasn't logical fallacy, it was a simile. Do people now use words completely independent of what they mean?

His roast was by far the funniest of the show. I taped his roast and have watched it several times. It's fricking hilarious. I can understand why some people wouldn't "get" it; you just have to like a particular type of humor. Jim Norton didn't seem to get it and that's not surprising since he seems like the most unsophisticated comedian ever. I saw him mouthing "What?" during Norm's roast.

I love the line to Gilbert Gottfried the most. He says "there's no room that says 'scoundrel' on it". Brilliant.

Obama--Don't believe the hype. Don't believe the image. THE IMAGE IS A LIE!

Some of the funniest reactions to me were the guys who didn't seem to get it, but knew he was doing it on purpose and had his reasons. Like Greg Giraldo. There's a priceless reaction shot of him where he seems to be thinking, "Why are you committing career suicide at this roast??"

Nobody gets the meaning of the word "irony" anymore. Besides, he had all the great comebacks.

"Norm, what are you doing?"

"I wanted to laugh tonight, so I'm reading Marmaduke."

-Your face...looks...like a cauliflower.

-You've got a *beep* dog face. (to audience) How did you not get that?

Damn that was funny. I was nearly rolling on the floor during his act. Although, I actually found it funnier the 2nd time around.

Know that, thank you, next question.

So he was that not funny intentionally? I'm sorry but I did not laugh once during his whole set, maybe I was just so used to the shock laughs that I couldn't appreciate it. After all I had just seen Cloris make out with John Stamos so I could have been suffering Post-traumatic-stress-disorder during his bit.

However... it's a roast, isn't there some sort of unwritten rule about roasts that you're supposed to be filthy as all hell and curse every 35 seconds? I found Cloris to be way funnier than Norm (But then again who didn't? She ruled). The only time Norm made me laugh was when it wasn't his set and he had his newspaper reading comeback (I wanted to read something funny so I'm reading Marmaduke) and of course the blueberries moment.

Here's where I had my biggest problem, he had cue cards in his hand that never left his gaze. I'm sorry but he should have the ability to memorize his jokes or at least hide the cards and look at them sparingly. I don't get if that was part of his act or not (I've never seen his act before now I'll admit it) but it pissed me off no end.

If you have a problem with what I say, learn the meaning of a joke and shut up

reply

Wow, you def. missed the point if you didn't realize the cards were on purpose.

reply

I'm sorry but sucking on purpose doesn't make it any less sucky. seriously I have never heard or seen more forced laughter in my life. He was funny when he said he wanted to read something funny so he was reading marmaduke nad he killed when he pointed out that everyone wanted to see what's-his-name (It's been a while since I saw my DVD of the roast and i don't wanna do research) pick blueberries, but his jokes flat out were not funny, I actually felt bad for him. If the point was to be mocking the process then fine he did that, but it just seemed like a lame stand-up act to me

He was mocking Bob Saget by making corny jokes just like Bob did on America's Funniest Home Videos..

How can no one in this thread get that?
