Norm fans, if Norm pooped in a can you'd call it 'genius'

Face it, he's not funny. Has never really been. When the topic of comedy greats come up, it's usually folks like Carlin, Pryor, Cosby, Bruce, etc., not Norm MacDonald. He's just one of many average comedians and on this roast he was even worse than average. He's not a genius. It's so pathetic that when he does bad jokes, you say it's GENIUS because he's deliberately doing bad jokes. NO !! He's doing bad jokes because he's not a good enough comedian to come up with good jokes. I bet if he went up there and did Lovitz's material, you'd call him a genius. Jeez.

He wasn't spoofing Saget, stop looking for answers where they simply aren't. Are you just to immature to accept that your favorite comic bombed, and just wasn't funny ? The excuses are just endless. Some of you say he wasn't funny because he didn't want to be there. Oh bullsh!t. Why can't people just be honest ? He wasn't funny because he's not a good comedian. Plain and simple. The whole act he was pulling even before his routine was dumb, sitting there reading the newspaper, how dumb ? And he kept on doing it all through the other comics' routines, so stupid. He's an example of those comedians who think they're funny but they're actually not. Like Sarah Silverman.

I've actually heard Norm's comedy material. Genius my butt. This guy just does stupid jokes that every average comic in the 90s used to do. In fact, in one of his routines, he stole a joke that british comic Jasper Carrot has been doing for years. It goes something like:

"They say laughter is the best medicine, and I agree it is. Unless you're a diabetic, then insulin comes in pretty handy !"

Stolen word-for-word from Carrot's material. And I'm sure it isn't Carrot who stole it from Norm. Carrot has been in the business for decades and has hours and hours worth of stand-up material.

Also, you morons saying Norm was funny are so arrogant. You pretend like you 'get it' and that you're actually qualified to be good connoisseurs of comedy. Look, even the professional comics on the dais were not laughing that hard. The fact that you didn't notice that proves how blinded you are, how your fanatical love of this hack comic has clouded your vision. It was so clear, so awkward, none of the professional comedians on the dais were laughing, none of them thought it was that hilarious, their reaction was so different than the one they had to actual funny comedians. Take Leachman's routine, for example, and compare their reaction to McDonald's. THEY JUST WEREN'T IMPRESSED !! And these are professional comedians. Jim Norton is one of the cleverest comics out there, you'd think he'd have gotten it but he himself made fun of McDonald and called it unfunny. If Jimmy Norton didn't get it, what makes you arrogant enough to think you succeeded were Norton failed ? He's smarter than you'll ever be, you dummies.

Actually Jim Norton mentioned on Opie & Anthony this week that he thought Norm was hilarious on the roast. Norton, Opie and Anthony all said they were Norm fans and always wanted to get him on the show.

reply

I don't believe it. Norton made fun of Norm's act.

He can make fun of his act and like it at the same time. If you think the two are mutually exclusive, you must not even understand what a roast is.

I guess you meant Norton was slamming him for sucking. He probably was slamming him, but only because he's a nervous little boy who never got attention from all the jocks and cheerleaders (who happened to look just like the audience). And he took advantage of their confusion for his own personal gain. Nothing wrong with that, it makes him funny and so does his honesty about it.

The only thing Norm did "wrong" was to do something obvious i.e. mocking the roast. Of COURSE we're all thinking 'these are the same jokes every roast just with (mostly) different people'. And that the emphasis on being mean is getting a little cliched. It's human nature to make fun of that. You'd be seriously considering taking that angle yourself if you were asked to be on the dais. Unless you're a halfwit.

God Damn it in the ass

Wow, does your mind seriously work on this base of a level? Norm told bad jokes = Norm isn't funny. Norton made fun of Norm = he didn't like his act. Does your brain lack the cognitive capabalities to see past the surface of any given situation, or is this some sort of meta tribute to Norm's performance where you're pretending to not get it in honor of him pretending to tell bad jokes? If not, why do you even watch roasts if you don't have a basic understanding of how they work? I mean, after viewing it were you convinced that Bob Saget actually did molest the Olsen twins?

For the record, I definitely think Norm bombs sometimes, but this wasn't an instance of it. As stated before, that's why the comedians were laughing their asses off and the people in the crowd mostly looked confused.

reply

1. His jokes were purposefully unfunny.
2. They were insanely old fashioned. That stuff would have actually been funny about 50 years ago. He knew it.

Why are you so aggressive toward people you don't agree with? It seems odd.

Procrastination fools you into thinking you succeed merely by not failing.

I just don't buy the 'deliberately unfunny' thing. So, was Jon Lovitz's routine deliberately unfunny ? Is he just a genius messing with us ? I doubt it. Nothing about Norm McDonald's comedy suggests he's a particularly bright dude, he's not that funny and most of his comedy is the same as the comedy being done by thousands of other average comedians out there. This guy is no Hicks.

Seriously, you can't be this dense.

I just don't buy the 'deliberately unfunny' thing

Are you *beep* serious? Whether or not you thought it was funny overall, you must be able to grasp the fact that he was trying to tell deliberately corny jokes. "I hear you're a vegetarian, but you're still full of baloney in my book!" Are you so stupid that you don't realize he said these types of jokes because they were so unfunny?

Whether you think it was a good idea or not, I sincerely hope that you don't believe that Norm was trying to tell jokes that he legitimately thought were funny.

Maybe it's because I've seen tons of bad comics, but when I heard bad comedy, my first instinct is to assume the comedian is unfunny, not that they're a genius who are being deliberately unfunny. When some hack comic is standing on stage doing dumb, hackneyed jokes, is he just a genius who's pretending to be unfunny ? I mean, where do you draw the line ? It's a slippery slope. Next time if someone else's material sucks, we can just excuse the bad comedy by saying he/she is a genius who is just pretending to be unfunny. I can say the same about Lovitz, and other people whose routines just weren't that funny. Maybe Lovitz is a genius and that horrible routine he did was just him pushing our buttons. How can you argue against that ? You have no proof that Lovitz wasn't deliberately being unfunny. Look, if this happened to a great comedian like Carlin or Hicks, then maybe it'd be true to say that they were deliberately being unfunny, but Norm McDonald has NEVER been that good a comic. Nobody ever brings up his name when discussing great comics, just the weirdos on this message board. I've listened religiously to tons and tons of comedy since the early 90s and I think I know good comedians, and Norm just NEVER stood out as a great comic. I recently went on youtube and watched all his routines and HE'S JUST NOT FUNNY. All his jokes are just as bad as the ones he did in the roast. So maybe his WHOLE CAREER has been one extended Kaufmann-esque trick, right ? He's been deliberately unfunny all his career and he's just never got tired of the joke ? I mean, come on, people !!

Lol what?

When me and my friends talk about "great comics" the guys who frequent these roasts names will never be mentioned. Giraldo, Ross ect. they really aren't that funny their routines are pretty repetitive every year not all of us are 13 and thing fart jokes are funny all the time.

Really your view of what comedy is appears to be so narrow which is really unfortunate, you come off as an idiot and for the love of god learn the functions of the "Enter" key.

reply

Well your friends have bad taste in comedy. I just went to youtube and listened to a lot of Norm's material and it's the same old seinfeld-esque, observation-based comedy that millions of comedians started doing in the 90s, how is norm's material any less hackneyed and trite than Ross' or Giraldo's ? Hmmm ? I swear, the videos are on youtube, I'll even link you to them if you ask, so you can hear for yourself how trite Norm's material is. I'm not making this up, just go to youtube and listen for yourself. Listen to his performance on star search, on hbo, etc., boring, trite stuff, a lot of which is repeated in several performances, which shows you how limited his material is. You're overrating this guy, he's an average comic and does not stand out.

IMHO, great comics are:

Emo Philips
Bill Hicks
Tom Lehrer
George Carlin
Rodney Dangerfield
Steven Wright
Demetri Martin
Zach Galifianakis
Jim Norton
Jimmy Carr
Wendy Liebman
Russ Meneve
Bob Newhart
Dennis Miller
Henny Youngman
Milton Berle

IMHO, overrated comics are:

Dane Cook
Carlos Mencia
Jerry Seinfeld
Norm McDonald
Lewis Black
Robin Williams
Chris Rock, Richard Pryor, Bill Cosby, Eddy Murphy (and pretty much all other black comics, with the possible exception of Louis Ramey)
Ellen DeGeneres
Lisa Lampanelli
Jeff Foxworthy
Sarah Silverman
Jim Carrey

Um...did Norm MacDonald sodomize your grandparents? What's with the hostility towards his fans? Bizarre.

reply

ha ha. OP you are a jackass. Of course he was doing bad jokes on purpose. Norm does whatever he wants and it's funny. Even if it's telling bad jokes. That's it.

reply

Holy sh**, what a whiny bitch. So you didn't find something funy. Did you have to be ALL over these forums going off about it left and right? Fu**ing spaz.

reply

The OP doesn't have a clue. He says when you ask people who "brilliant" comics are Norm's name never comes up. I guarantee if were to to ask all those comics on your list(The ones who are still alive anyway) if Norm is funny, they would all answer with a resounding yes. Norm is hand's down one of the funniest comedians of the last 30 years.

"Stolen word-for-word from Carrot's material. And I'm sure it isn't Carrot who stole it from Norm. Carrot has been in the business for decades and has hours and hours worth of stand-up material."

LMAO.

Why would anyone reply to a person that made a comment like this?

reply

I second everything you wrote.
