Can anyone please explain the 'henry fonda blueberries' joke ?

Jimmy Norton's joke, can anyone explain it ? Norton's set wasn't that good, actually. It was short, but somewhat sweet.

Jim Norton was making fun of Norm's set, comparing it to something very old-fashioned and boring, like Henry Fonda picking blueberries.

Then Norm got the last laugh by sarcastically saying he doesn't know anyone who wouldn't love seeing Henry Fonda pick blueberries.

Norm's set WAS funny, by the way, hilarious in fact. You have to get that he is telling corny-ass jokes on purpose. The jokes are so bad, they're funny, and it's also funny watching the audience frown and not get it.

Norm's set was by far the funniest.. Obviously he purposely made bad jokes, but they were soooo bad they made me cry..

It was a rather obscure reference--I was surprised more people haven't asked. It was a reference to the movie On Golden Pond.

Paul_Ke is an example of someone who didn't get the joke, but thinks he did. He also didn't get the fact that Norm MacDonald was JUST NOT FUNNY, he thinks it was a moment of genius, that the bad jokes were done on purpose. It's this kind of silliness that made people think Andy Kaufman was a genius, when he was really just an unfunny comic who couldn't think of funny jokes so he pulled silly stunts. It's far easier to wrestle women than it is to sit down with nothing but pen and paper and churn out clever, thought-provoking jokes.

Kunle2002 is an example of an idiot, he likes to CAPITALIZE words when trying to emphasize their importance which really should not be necessary.

What Norm did absolutely went over people's heads completely in some cases, and there are others who got it but did not find it entertaining. I for one did get the joke and enjoyed it, I won't explain it again because it has been explained countless times. However there will always be some people with a very narrow mind who possess the belief that whatever does not fit into their view of comedy simply must not be funny and try to tell us why we shouldn't find it funny. Because clearly the same old/gay/ugly/fat joke told 8 different times a roast will never get old, they are all comedic genius!

Kunle2002 you sound frustrated. I imagine you would be since you obviously don't get any brand of humor other than your own limited one. I've watched Norm MacDonald's stand-up for years, and I've watched him on SNL, so don't tell me I "think" I got the joke when I actually didn't. By the way, the other roast members got it too, because they were laughing their heads off during his set.

The admission that you don't get Andy Kaufman's humor either is very telling. No, I don't think he was a genius, but I think his antics were often times funny, if for no other reason that it irritates dummies like you.

Do you really think they write their own jokes? Come on, almost everyones set has the exact same joke style. Its obvious they have writers that write for everyone. The roasters might have a couple of their own jokes in there but the majority is just written by the comedy central writers.

Almost every roast has a weird set. Norm McDonald. Farrah Faucet. Bea Arthur etc. Its just to change things up a bit so you arent watching Giraldo's style over and over again.

To not find Norm's set at this roast funny is to not understand why stuff is funny. Admit it, you usually laugh because the people around you are laughing, don't you?

Why would you ask a question just so you could insult whoever gave you the answer? Accept the fact that what he did went completely over your head....

Okay so I just re-watched Norm's part of the roast. "Hey she may be a vegetarian, but she's still full of balognas in my book! Bob has a beautiful face like a flower! ...A cauli flower. No offense but your face looks like a cauli flower. There are times when Bob has something on his mind..when he wears a hat!"

You honestly believe he meant these jokes to be taken seriously? I don't get it, how *beep* clear is it that he wasn't serious? He could have told a knock-knock joke and you still wouldn't get it.

reply

Yeah, they were clearly jokes nicked from an old joke book for kids or something along those lines. Do people think this was Norm MacDonald's serious attempt at a standup routine? He's been a professional comedian for like twenty years or more. We've seen his other material, and whatever you think about it, it's most definitely not reading ancient joke-book jokes aloud. How can someone not be tickled by the idea of a professional comedian in the 21st century deadpanning a bunch of corny old jokes? It's a brilliant idea, delivered flawlessly.

I sometimes wonder if a lot of the problem is Comedy Central's ill-advised idea to cut a bunch of the bit for time in the broadcast version. I was lucky enough to see it the first time uncut, online, so I fairly quickly glommed onto what he was doing (though I will admit to being baffled for a few minutes). But having since seen the short version that aired on tv, I can kind of see how someone wouldn't get it. I can't see how someone would not get it and then stubbornly continue to not get it even after it's been explained to them, and come on internet message boards arguing that the people who get it don't REALLY get it and are only pretending to get it, and persist with this idea that Norm Macdonald was attempting to do a serious standup comedy act and failed, but that's just me.
