I initially watched the movie thinking it was a prequel too - turns out it's not it's actually Van Wilder 3 - Freshman Year (As Listed on here). This Van Wilder is not the original Character - It's his son - which explains quite a bit. If you rewatch it or recall The Dean mentions to Van that he knew his father and he was a trouble maker when he's explaining all the rules and warning him not to cause trouble.

Youre about ten years off buddy, iphones didnt become "the rage" until around 2005. Smart phones didnt even exist in the mid 90s we were still stuck on dumb phones with monochrom screens, maybe a few high end models had color screens.

Anachronisms: Van's phone is an iPhone 3G. However, the film is supposed to be set in 1995 meaning it is impossible for him to own one.
It's a reboot not a prequel.
