Nobody knows for sure what was wrong with him, of course there are speculations, some say he might have been bipolar/manic depressive, others say he was schizophrenic.

Personally, I think he was simply a product of his upbringing, he might have been bipolar, but if he was there was no surprise in that considering his upbringing, he had a very harsh upbringing, and life in general, and was treated very badly by the people around him, what would have been surprising is if he had turned out "normal".

I would think Borderline Personality Disorder. At least based on the movie.

Your relationships are usually in turmoil. You may idealize someone one moment and then abruptly and dramatically shift to fury and hate over perceived slights or even minor misunderstandings. This is because people with borderline personality disorder often have difficulty accepting gray areas ? things seem to be either black or white.

Paranoia and hallucinations are also symptoms of porphyria.
