Mental Illness of the King

Anyone will to give a diagnoss of the mental illness suffered by the king? Have
articles been written on it? I would say manic depressive.

reply

Nobody knows for sure what was wrong with him, of course there are speculations, some say he might have been bipolar/manic depressive, others say he was schizophrenic.

Personally, I think he was simply a product of his upbringing, he might have been bipolar, but if he was there was no surprise in that considering his upbringing, he had a very harsh upbringing, and life in general, and was treated very badly by the people around him, what would have been surprising is if he had turned out "normal".

Same here, i just figured him for incredibly spoilt, I have heard about that. Where people are spoilt to the point of no return it goes straight to their head and almost drives them to the brink of insanity.

I agrue that this is what a lot of dictators suffered from too, not saying that they were all spoilt too but when you have a certain power over people you can let that power get to your head.

Ashmi any question

I think the technical psychiatric term is "spoiled little a-hole syndrome."

I would think Borderline Personality Disorder. At least based on the movie.

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/borderline-personality-disorder/DS00442/DSECTION=symptoms

Borderline personality disorder affects how you feel about yourself, how you relate to others and how you behave.

Signs and symptoms of borderline personality disorder may include:

Impulsive and risky behavior, such as risky driving, unsafe sex, gambling sprees or illegal drug use
Awareness of destructive behavior, including self-injury, but sometimes feeling unable to change it
Wide mood swings
Short but intense episodes of anxiety or depression
Inappropriate anger and antagonistic behavior, sometimes escalating into physical fights
Difficulty controlling emotions or impulses
Suicidal behavior
Feeling misunderstood, neglected, alone, empty or hopeless
Fear of being alone
Feelings of self-hate and self-loathing
When you have borderline personality disorder, you often have an insecure sense of who you are. Your self-image, self-identity or sense of self often rapidly changes. You may view yourself as evil or bad, and sometimes you may feel as if you don't exist at all. An unstable self-image often leads to frequent changes in jobs, friendships, goals and values.

Your relationships are usually in turmoil. You may idealize someone one moment and then abruptly and dramatically shift to fury and hate over perceived slights or even minor misunderstandings. This is because people with borderline personality disorder often have difficulty accepting gray areas ? things seem to be either black or white.

reply

He definitely could have borderline personality disorder. Also perhaps a sociopath.

Paranoia and hallucinations are also symptoms of porphyria.

reply

Considering all the inbreeding at the time, anything is possible. I recently viewed the film and enjoyed it very much. I didn't know anything about the Danish royal family. Is the current generation ever in the news?

reply

In world news, only when they get married and/or have children. But they are very much loved in Denmark.

reply

And as I'm sure you know, King George III of England had porphyria. He was related no doubt to Christian.

Beauty is truth, truth beauty.

reply

Yes, I do know. Poor "bad" King George...

Love your sig. :)

reply

Thanks! You saw The Madness of King George, didn't you? I think in the past porphyria also meant general madness, if memory serves. Robert Browning wrote a poem called Porphyria's Love that I used to teach a million years ago.

reply

No, I've read about him. History is one of my passions. I'll check this poem, thank you for the tip. :)

I haven't seen the movie in years, but I remember that it's very good. I'm going to watch it again soon. Helen Mirren plays the Queen. The tone is sort of whimsical. Hope you like it and the poem.

however it seemed he was getting better when the doctor and queen were happy.
