Romance not well-prepared

I thought ARA did not set up Struensee's romance with Caroline very well. It almost seemed as if they danced, everything went into slow-motion, and next they were kissing and boinking.

In general I liked the film. I certainly found Vikander easy on the eyes. But I suspect that, in an effort to be historically faithful, ARA lacked a compelling arc of dramatic tension.

I thought that there wasn't much chemistry between the two leads, which ultimately "spoiled" the movie for me. Still, a quality film by all means.

I thought the start of their relationship was quite nice (Caroline discovering that they both love to read) but then they danced and immediately after that they were kissing and sleep together, it just went too fast for me.

I thought it was a pretty good build up actually. There were lots of scenes after the book discovery and prior to the dancing where they would catch eachother's eye or there would be tension in the fact that they were purposely trying NOT to catch eachother's eye. By the time they danced it had been very well established that they both felt a connection. I didn't really need the extra emphasis during the dance to be honest, the tension of their suddenly being in such an intimate situation with such an established attraction was more than enough but it didn't put me off. If people hadn't noticed the build up prior to the dance then I think maybe they were paying too much attention to the costumes or something because it was definitely there.

I thought there was a great build up too.

I was aware of the romantic tension between them but I thought them sleeping together showed little conflict between the two characters about how forbidden their love is. Instead of kissing and sleeping together they should've just hugged or had their foreheads close together to show their conflict and struggles. This is all just my opinion of course and how I interpreted it.

I completely agree with you. I found some justification in the doctor's liberal political thinking, it leads you to believe that he would be more daring and impulsive when it comes to passion than other men. And with the queen I viewed her as young-daring/impulsive, trapped in a loveless/sexless marriage for so long-weakened defenses, and their meeting was on her terms so she probably felt a false sense of safety in that. Taking those things into consideration as a viewer I was able to make the leap and believe that they would not express as much conflict on the screen.
