The opening episode ran against Whitechapel over on ITV which picked up something like 8.1 million viewers (30%), while Moses Jones on BBC2 only grabbed around 1.4 million (5%). Moses Jones also had to compete against, Who Do You Think You Are on BBC1 which pulled in 6.3 million (23%).
I've finally caught up with Moses Jones on iPlayer, after having watched Whitechapel last Monday. I couldn't believe how superior Moses Jones is. I'm far more gripped by the story, the photography and atmosphere is great, and the acting is really good (was impressed by Obi Abili as Joseph, the taxi guy, the most).
I felt Whitechapel was lazily written in particular in comparison. I'm surprised so many of the reviewers found in favour of Whitechapel.
The second installment of BBC2's new drama Moses Jones gained 1.2 million and a 5% share in the 9pm hour
I have no idea what they mean by the word "gained" here since it seems to have lost a couple hundred thousand, but remained steady in relation to the competition. Whitechapel, "The drama, which stars former Spooks actor Rupert Penry-Jones, attracted 7.1 million viewers and a 28% share in the 9pm hour, according to unofficial overnight figures," lost a million viewers and two share points.
Well, it's staying steady even if it's just being steadily creamed. It deserves much better ratings but it's up against tough competition, unfortunately.
It's a pity really. But having a black male lead could be the guiding factor when viewers are switching over.Who Do You Think You Are? is a nice show but predoinantly for white audiences. Whitechapel had a much better known cast. I for one would love to see Moses Jones return. Sexy Shaun Parkes must return though
