I'm No Dante Alighieri Scholar...
Although I do have a degree in literature, I paid little attention during those classes where Dante was discussed. I did, however, retain a little knowledge about his writing, but I'll be damned (get it?) if I can see to what degree his work is being referenced in this film. I mean, he's even given a "based on" writing credit here on IMDb. Is the influence so obvious that the filmmakers felt it necessary to give credit to a long-dead writer with no enforceable copyrights? I mean, besides a couple of character names and a fire reference or two, I didn't see the "Inferno". And I simply do not care enough about this issue to go back for a refresher course in epic poetry. I was hoping that an enthusiastic graduate student or hip professor would provide a shortcut and perhaps give us all the CliffsNotes (lately usurped by SparkNotes) version. That is, if indeed it's worthwhile to even bother, since it seems there's not much Dante to be found in the film to begin with.
