Totally clueless (SPOILERS)

I am trying to understand the plot but having a very hard time with it...

I will be forever grateful to the person who is willing to explain the following scenes for me:

1. When he imagined (or dreamed of) his fiend's death in his sleep and then the next day his friend's wife was in the shower and then he received that note... What was that all about? He obviously passed out from drinking and did something bad to his friend's wife - possibly forced sex on her but not sure - why did he come back? To figure out what he did?

2. If his friend knew him so well ("Hide your daughters"), why did he invite him to sleep at his place and introduced him to his wife?

3. When that lady got drunk and then was throwing up in the bathroom - who exactly raped her? Did she remember who it was? Why was she yelling at him? What was she blaming him for? That he abandoned her? Or that he knew she was being raped?

4. When the girl went to the bathroom right after the older gentlemen (famous artist) went to sleep, there were some weird noises. Did they have sex? Why did the main character go to sleep right after the girl? I know something was implied, but I am not sure what.

5. Why did the artist like him so much? Why did he invite him to his house and introduced him to his wife?

6. When they were laying in bed naked, the guy and the artist's wife, it looked as if they had sex, yet later the wife mentioned "nothing happened, we did not even start". Well, did they or didn't they?

7. The sculptor next door who reported the affair to her husband, why was he crying and saying "it is not fair"?

8. What is the main idea of this movie? What are they trying to say?

I appreciate your comments. I hope I am not the only one having troubles digesting the plot.

Ku had sex with his friend's wife. I'd say it was rape, because in an earlier scene, it was directly implied that Ku raped the drunk girl who was throwing up in the bathroom, even though she mistakenly accused the other guy (director Kim) of raping her (he was in bed listening to the rape).

Why Ku went back to Bu's house - part of the film's humour (making rape look humourous forces viewers to stop and think about the dangers of drinking, the dangers of placing yourself in vulnerable situations, the meaning of personal responsibility, etc ..., rape isn't a laughing matter, but it's depicted that way in the film to make young people seriously think about the consequences of drinking and dressing lasciviously), Ku trudging back to his friend's house, acting like "woe is me, what now, what did I do", as if he forgot he raped her.
2. If his friend knew him so well ("Hide your daughters"), why did he invite him to sleep at his place and introduced him to his wife?
Because Bu idolized Ku and built up a myth around him. Bu wanted his wife to know the man he idolized so much. Since they had not seen each other in years, Bu probably assumed that Ku had changed since they last worked together. Ku was supposed to be forty-years old, it was reasonable that Bu assumed Ku, now a mature adult, had abandoned his skirt-chasing ways.
3. When that lady got drunk and then was throwing up in the bathroom - who exactly raped her? Did she remember who it was? Why was she yelling at him? What was she blaming him for? That he abandoned her? Or that he knew she was being raped?
Ku. The other man, director Kim, was in bed. Kim was wide awake and heard what was going on. If you listened closely, you could hear the sound of a man (Ku) groaning as the one woman was screaming to get back in and the other woman was wretching and dry heaving. She (I think her name was Gong) mistakenly accused Kim of raping her, and accused Ku of allowing it to happen since he was there too. I felt it was supposed to be a humourous and ironic moment, the real director (Sang-Soo Hong) making fun of and mocking the victim because the victim was so drunk that she didn't know what happened yet was "throwing a tantrum" about being raped, and throwing that tantrum at the rapist without even realizing Ku was the rapist, and accusing Ku of abandoning her (irony) when she was drunk out of her mind on the bathroom floor, utterly vulnerable.
4. When the girl went to the bathroom right after the older gentlemen (famous artist) went to sleep, there were some weird noises. Did they have sex? Why did the main character go to sleep right after the girl? I know something was implied, but I am not sure what.
I believe Ku had sex with her as well, and it was rape because she was too drunk to consent and to know what was really going on, but, for the second time, the rape victim mistakenly accused the old professor (Mr. Yang) of rape, and the man that Ku spoke to the next morning made it clear that the rape victim slept around with all the professors, so nobody would believe her anyway, but Mr. Yang might still get into trouble for "it".
5. Why did the artist like him so much? Why did he invite him to his house and introduced him to his wife?
The old professor, Mr Yang, was once Ku's art professor. He told Ku that he would make a better filmmaker than artist, and Ku went on to become a respected filmmaker. When they meet again after 15+ years, Ku told Yang that Yang was the reason he became a filmmaker. Flattery, combined with a night of communal drinking, led to Yang inviting him over. Yang was not aware this his wife Gosun once had a year-long college romance with Ku. And Yang was not aware of Ku's sexual shenanigans.
6. When they were laying in bed naked, the guy and the artist's wife, it looked as if they had sex, yet later the wife mentioned "nothing happened, we did not even start". Well, did they or didn't they?
They definitely had sex. On the beach, when Gosun said "we didn't even begin", she was referring to their lack of a serious relationship. They never had a serious relationship, not even during their college days.
7. The sculptor next door who reported the affair to her husband, why was he crying and saying "it is not fair"
Because Mr. Yang didn't really care about Gosun having sex with Ku. He said to the guy, "tell her I don't blame her and not to worry". Mr Yang didn't want to make a big thing out of it. He forgave his wife. The guy who caught them might have been hoping to use the situation to detract from any accusations of sexual wrongdoing against Mr. Yang.

Wow! Thank you for answering my questions.

:))) you see Ku as a totally depraved satyr... I suppose Woody Allen's characters might look exactly the same :D

:) perhaps you might enjoy re-watching it.

I hold though v.different opinions from the previous answer

1. no, he didn't (I posted a complete answer here http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1275891/board/nest/162622340)
2. the friend was envious of his work and continuity in the film industry.
In his teasing about the skirts you can catch a glimpse of that. And wanted to show off -although not really satisfied - his single "achievement": a family life.
3. it was director Kim - although , the rape could be the "rape" . She might have been bitter & regretful for what happened, and blamed director Ku - our guy - for not inquiring about her (he was notorious for behaving rather aloof with others, not keeping his promises etc)
4. well, an old lion is still a lion, right?
5. the painter was embarrassed by his behavior the previous night, and took him (as a "buffer" ) when meeting the wife, with whom he had a very poor sexual relationship and he was uncomfortable with her possible reaction. Also the director was a decent (good looking, articulate, famous enough) and insecure guy ...a, and young... so, sort of "offering" for the unsatisfied goddess of the house.
6.don't know statistics, but generally the sexual intercourse is seen as happening later in a relationship - although Ku and KoSoon (or Gosun) might have different views of what the relationship between them looked like and when it all started, if at all...
7.why would a guy cry, when he's always around the house, for various reasons, and not even the "wronged" husband is angry ? :)
8. :) see it again.
(you might find it online on a website called gooddrama.net, but you didn't hear it from me)

...isn't it Like I Know It All ? :D
