I agree with your first point; I think though, that this sometimes happens to lawyers and their perspective becomes distorted. Remember also that he doesn't yet know that Carlota murdered Macarena and Arcadia. Cristobal will probably figure out part of this, but the only way to connect Carlota to Arcadia's death will be through bank records about the cash withdrawal (which was probably redeposited within a couple of days) and through interviewing people who knew Arcadia. Unless the letter she left behind still exists.
Eugenio's son has a terminal illness and he probably has serious trouble facing this impending loss. Through all this Eugenio has not recognized the one basic fact that was revealed in Carlota's fantasy: She truly hates Paloma. She hates Paloma for being the child of Macarena and Cristobal. She probably would hate her if she were the actual child of Javier and Sagrario because she would still have been a child created in love. Love that Carlota never got and may have never deserved. I wish we knew more about her parents because it's hard to figure out how she could have grown up in the same household and be so different from Macarena and Javier.
The one thing that Carlota has accomplished is making most people believe she loves Paloma. Not that this requires a lot of work because we're supposed to love our relatives; for someone to hate a niece on this level and without obvious justifiable cause is inconceivable to most people. Even Romina would have difficulty with the idea that Carlota hates Paloma. This revelation will shock all of Real al Monte although I think that Camila will see it after a decent amount of thought. She will be the most horrified.
Eugenio will be kicking himself. However, remember that Televisa writers typically have villains boasting of their crimes up to the end. Having her isolate Paloma with the intent to kill her provides the one circumstance under which Carlota will finally tell the truth (including fessing up to the murder of Paloma's little dog and Macarena's first set of doves). The only question then will be who will rescue her. I'm betting that it will be Emiliano or Cristobal, the latter of whom should be getting a pain in the chest or some other standard empathetic pain experienced when a loved one is in danger.
