What really happened in the original story? [spoiler I guess.]

Hi - does anyone know how the original story was supposed to go? I saw this film I think before I realized that some of those involved were asking us not to see it, as it apparently was some betrayal of the original vision and had been taken out of their hands. I didn't dislike the movie as much as some, but was left wondering how the film was really supposed to go.

Has there been a public statement of this, or even a rumor that seems well-informed, that can be linked? Is it not out there because it would further harm the original artists?

I suppose it's possible that it won't be sourced properly, but I can't help but be curious if there is any information out there. I thought there might be here in the IMDB discussion threads, but at first look I haven't seen any.
