Extremely Disappointed

After seeing the brilliance that is "Titus", I was most certainly excited to see that Julie was making yet ANOTHER Shakespearean film (and went out of the way to see it).....but sadly, I must admit that I was greatly disappointed in this film.

It was incredibly boring, first and foremost. The same dreary/uninteresting location throughout the entire film, extremely tame takes on the characters (as compared to Titus) and very little "modernizing" and surrealism from what I could see. I guess I was really hoping that Titus was a taste of what was to come with this film, but it really was like night and day between the two--I was not enticed in the least by The Tempest. In fact, I just waited for it to end.

I feel as if the director shied away from being as extreme with this film as she was with "Titus" (unsure why--as far as I know, it had pretty positive critical acclaim?). Yes, I know they are two different films--but my point still stands. I guess I was just expecting SO much more from this film...

you don't have to throw in gimmicks to make a Shakespeare film good. If Ms. Taymor is interested in telling the story in a more straightforward manner, more power to her. You don't need the weird modernizing you got in "Titus" to make Shakespeare enjoyable, and if you do, you don't really appreciate Shakespeare for what he is.

i like the modernizing of shakespear. julie just fails miserably at making it work. titus was just out of place and weird. to me she tries to copy baz lurhman but simply doesn't have the charisma in her work that he does.
