The DVD making-of feature said that what look like tattoos are actually Shakespearean swear words that appeared on Caliban's body after having been taught to speak by Prospera. I believe Caliban says "I needs must curse!" at one point in the film, so maybe they are manifesting spontaneously this way, like "Help me" on Regan's torso in The Exorcist.
