Why is this not a monster hit?

I can't believe how barren IMDB is for this movie. I just watched it and came to IMDB to enjoy some comments about it and I'm shocked, there aren't any!

This is the most enjoyable movie I've seen this year. It literally has everything. Humour, great story, great acting, magic, special effects that are actually for once, special, and not the dry lifeless CG set pieces we've come to expect from Hollywood. The magic of this movie is in the way it combines everything into a joyous celebration of what a real fantasy movie should be.

I can't recommend it highly enough. Anyone that watches this and doesn't like it has no heart, or maybe they're goblins ;)

I avoided this movie for the longest time because of the title. Woochi doesn't translate very well into english. It sounds pretty lame and silly. If you can get past that though, as I eventually did, the rest is all uphill from there and I promise you'll be taken into a magnificently great movie experience.

Agreed; this is probably the best original foreign film I have seen since Django Sukiyaki.

reply

Agreed, this is an excellent film. I usually find when I download this type that I'll skip parts or watch in pieces as I'm not drawn in, Woochi kept me entertained throughout.

I actually miss the characters once the films stops rolling, and that's quite a rare thing.

9/10 and highly recommended.

No my dear, procrastination is an art form!

It actually became a hit in Korea when it came out in 2009. I love the movie. But surprisingly, was only able to find a dvd last week. It was enjoyable all throughout. Maybe I should post a review of it here.

Actually just picked up the blu-ray today and was definitely blown away. Outstanding mix of fantasy, comedy, martial arts and brilliant action set pieces.

I'd love to see this movie become a huge hit just to continue to bolster the growing South Korean film industry, which has really started putting out excellent fantasy films. Woochi is an incredible step forward from Dragon Wars, and despite that films limitations, was still visually impressive.

Cheers to all involved with this film.

Dragon Wars was terrible and Woochi was definitely an improvement, but that's just damning with faint praise. If you want a truly great action/cgi movie from South Korea, see The Host. Unlike either of the former movies, The Host has great story and character development as well as impressive CGI.

reply

Agreed. Woochi doesn't hold a candle againt The Host. 5/10 for me.

Watched the film yesterday and liked the special effects a lot. It's a great fantasy film - so I am a bit surprised to see it compared to "The Host" - the only thing those films have in common is that they are from Korea. The Host is a completely different genre so I don't think you can compare these two movies. I'd rather compare Woochi (the German DVD has the title "War of Wizards" on it, btw), to films like Storm Warriors. But why compare ? Just watch it and enjoy it.

Sorry - I found it just shy of completely unwatchable.... Hated the too-quick edits and the characters didn't draw me in at all. A few of the special effects were clever, but that couldn't hold me. Normally I really like this sort of movie, and the description ofthe story sounded great - but the final product was not "user friendly" or something. Quite disappointed!

It is cool, that is your opinion and that is respected. Different strokes for different people. On the other hand I actually enjoy this movie a lot. It is just quirky enough, silly enough, and it does not feel like it takes itself seriously. Silly Korean movie fun with characters I actually really like. This is the movie where I discovered Dong-won Kang. He works for me because he's not just another pretty face (after seeing a few of his work already).

I can see why after watching about 15 minutes of this movie on Netflix. The movie plot moves very fast, with one scene cut quickly to another, leaving no time for the poor viewer (yours truly) to place a face to a name and to grasp the motivations of any character in the story. I'd probably brave it out, but my better half asked to switch to another movie. A movie that got better reception at my home recently was Stephen Chow's Journey to the West. It has lots of action, but does a better job in the characterization department.
