I didn't get what the ending was about

What happened at the end of the film? I watched it all the way through, but I found it unclear as to what happened when the guy all of a sudden woke up again.

I believe that he had to repeat his time in purgatory. However, the movie makes little sense and is rather hard to follow.

Might mean he still has a chance to live or he is doomed to purgatory forever. Not sure what William did wrong to be honest. I'm sure it's all supposed to be tied into a girl being killed in a botched rescue attempt and an upset father getting revenge.

In all honesty nobody seemed to be a bad guy to me except the father.
