Movies like this are inundated with characters that are emotionally crippled, conceded, selfish little snots that just repel me as a viewer. I'll pay good money to watch a movie that will put a character like that girl in their place. I actually paused to movie at one point to let my daughter know that if she acts remotely close to that while we're being chased by bad guys, I'm leaving her behind to die.
You hit the nail on the head when you described all of this family's dysfunction. I know it's "just a movie" but let's face it. The mother is spoiling the daughter rotten trying to compensate for her lack of a father figure. This happens a lot in real life. At one point she turns against Bob, lashing out and even striking him in a psychotic meltdown. If he had any sense he would run from such a relationship. If she did it once, there is no guarantee she won't do it again sometime down the road.
Sure, the script calls for the daughter to get an attitude adjustment, but in real life a spoiled child is going to want to stay that way. Should Bob try to discipline her for her own good to try to keep her from continuing her self-destructive behavior, all the kid needs to do is cry to mommy and manipulate her to take her side against the new father's correction.
Bob is an outsider, a Johnny-come-lately. In real life I doubt he would ever be afforded equal status in the family. He might even be resented by the kids who see him as a reminder that they didn't have a real father. He might spend the remainder of his life trying to get the kids to accept him completely, with the kids sensing his insecurity and milking it for all it's worth.
And then, there's a snot-nosed kid who can bypass top-level CIA security with a couple key strokes. OMG don't get me started! LOL Kinda amateurish writing all around, and borderline plagiarism maybe, given all the similarities to other movies.
