wtf? all that commotion for someone being shot in the shoulder?

they made a shoulder shot seem way more dramatic than it actually should've been. I just watched aron ralston portrayed by james franco cut off his own arm. plenty of other movies people get shot in the shoulder and it's another day at the office. they seriously couldn't just patch this kid up really quick? there was like 8 broskis to aid him. plus, its not like he was shot multiple times or anywhere important.

I'm not sure if you're going off the trailer, or actually having seen the movie.

Either way, SPOILER WARNING I guess:

It's not that the shoulder wound is a terrible thing, it could easily be patched up by going to the hospital, BUT, since he got it during a convenience store "robbery" the guys in the fraternity decide they want to take care of it on their own. None of them know anything about bullet wounds, so no one knows what to do...essentially he just keeps bleeding. So it does become an issue due to loss of blood.

ALSO Aron Ralston knew what he was doing when it came to stopping himself from bleeding out. The frat boys had NO IDEA.

Actually a shoulder wound is serious business.
Major blood vessels, nerves and you lungs all lead out your shoulder and pretty dense.
A nick in a main blood vessel let alone a full on tear and its game over.
The major nerves running thru the shoulder would lead to long term issues of motor function, partial or full paralysis.
Your lungs are skin balloons, a hole in it can collapse it (pneumo-thorax) or fill up with blood (Hemothorax) Actually your lungs are inside another "balloon" the pleura (separates the lung from the chest wall) which is where the air and or blood could be trapped which is how it really collapses.
Medical attention is of the utmost importance.
At the very least occlusive dressing would need to be applied to the bullet hole(s) to prevent air from filling in the pleura (balloon around the lung)
A collapsed lung can take time, which is what the doctor was talking about "he's got a few hours" but air needs to be prevented from collecting and his breathing has to be monitored on his WAY TO immediate medical attention.

fozitola,
That was a really good explanation-why anyone would think that was the least harmless place to take a bullet is beyond me. Uh, your toes? Fleshy part of your thigh, nowhere near a major artery? fingers? Yeah, painful as hell in a hand or foot, you'd probably never recover full use, but it's not going to make you bleed out or choke to death on your own blood.

That being said, several parts of the description of lung punctures, etc. you described in your post made me wince and inhale sharply. Skin balloons- GAH!

Everything that you see, I owe to spaghetti.

You must be very desensitized to violence to think that a gunshot to the shoulder is minor

reply

yes, I am.....but understand that it was the shoulder of all places. Probably the best place to get shot. It could have very well been patched up.

Any gunshot wound has to be reported. The fact is no matter were he got shot the dumb brothers would never had taken him to the hospital. But getting shot around the shoulder area is serious as in any gunshot wound. The shot went through and through which means it hit other parts of his insides while exiting the body. I agree the op must either has been watching too many movies or lives in a alternative universe. Let hm get shot anyway and see how serious it is.

"Let him get shot anyway and see how serious it is."

Hey yeah let's make him cut his own arm, I'd like to see that.

reply

Better yet let him just wait around until he can't breathe because of a collapsed lung. People have been watching way too much tv. They see people getting shot on TV and still have the strength to keep on running or fight his opponent. That does not happen in real life. You get shot you are down. I had a good friends who were shot in Vietnam a few in the leg. They all said it hurts like heck, it was like getting burned and you were not going anyway.

Ok I think youre being a little lax about the shoulder shot.

of course ive seen movies where the person gets shot in the shoulder or like their leg and their just chilling for half the movie until whatever altercation blows over, but this one wasn't really like that.

in fact the shot that this guy had seemed much too close to his neck/chest to really be considered a shoulder shot.

i don't know about you but ive seen stories in daily news where people have been shot in the shoulder and died.it doesn't happen often but it happens and I don't see why its so hard to believe if somebody shots you with a gun ANYWHERE on your body that you don't have a good chance of dying.I mean its a gun.

And the shoulder is different from an arm or a leg, its not an appendage therefore it cant be cut off or lived without.
