Anyone else dissapointed?

First off, I'm a 360 Owner and I am, I was expecting a lot more from this game because of all the hype that was surrounding it from the Soul Calibur Community. I also thought that online play was going to be awesome but it turned out to be a *beep* Button mashing spam fest that takes little to nothing skills. Then you have the issues with online connections because when you search for a quick match it will ALWAYS send you to ones that are full and or are already in combat. Oh! and before I forget the connection bars that are located on the lower left doesn't really help you determine whether the person your fighting has a really good connection, an OK connection, or a really bad connection because, from what I've noticed, is that your bars could be at a 5 but you'd still be lagging like *beep* during gameplay. Also, with the customization feature returning from SC3 I was expecting you could do a lot more this time around but it turns out that it hasn't changed at all with the exception of customizable parts...And what the *beep* is it with "blah blah is in conflict with blah blah" I mean its next gen people you should be able to add anything to your character. AND WHAT THE HELL IS WITH THE STAR WARS CHARACTERS!? Yoda is just unbelievable (in the WORST possible way imaginable), and then we got "THE APPRENTICE" who is just broke as hell, (the only other star wars character left is Darth Vader but people say he's too balanced (which is good) so i'll leave him alone). Also, should've mentioned this in the beginning but.., the story is too damn short! I mean I only got a minutes worth of gameplay out of it and for what? *beep* endings that leave you with more questions than answers. Anyways this is just my rant and i'll leave with these last words

*beep* you namdai, *beep* you.

Can't disagree with that.

Despite being vitrolic you bring up some good points.

Personally i like the game, but i did find there was some glaring errors in it, that keeps it from being the best soul calibre game, and makes it just a 8/10 fighting game.

Charecter balance is a huge issue, especially for yoda and Algol. I have played through the game with all charecters, done most of tower of souls, and a bunch of other stuff, as well as being almost obsessed with each soul calibre game since they came out. But ( assuming i don't choose yoda) when friends of mine that have never picked up an SC game play, i am getting my ass handed to me on a rather consistant basis.

Story mode is too short with not enough benefits. I played through with every god damn charecter, and i got nearly nothing besides a few new weapons and enough cash to customize the charecters.

Not enough changes in the levels, we are pretty much seeing the same stuff from sc3.

There are a few others , but you get the gist. Now i think it is still a good game, just not a good SC game. I mean i find myself playing morso like i would play an Armored core game, ( by that i mean to modify and pimp out charecters, make money , repeat. ) and i love the equipment destruction.

When playing multiplayer, ( with the exception of balance) non online i find it a much more entertaining experiance, especailly with the level of customization on the charecters.

That is one thing i would have to disagree with you heavily on . I find the customization to be awesome, both because it actually effects the charecters stats, and because it is very in depth. I mean i have made a range of charecters, from rick from splatterhouse to charecters from the forgotten realms books. And they all look pretty spot on. And that isn't even fully creating one, just using the standred charecters.

So in short, i would say i was disapointed, but the game was different enough to still make it one of the few 360 titles that i won't trade in in 2 months.

I think all experienced fighting gamers have made mention of the button mashing favoritism. There are a few other games where this is a problem, such as Dead or Alive...but nothing to this scale.

The throw counters are absolutely ridiculous. If the unskilled cretins stop button mashing for one nanosecond and throw up a block, we should be able to throw them. All they have to do is button mash some more and it throws you off AND LEAVES YOU VULNERABLE.

Disgraceful. My only problem with the game is aspects of the gameplay. I don't expect a lot of story out of fighting games...it's not why I play them.

I was disappointed SC2 had "guest" characters.

I was disappointed SC3 had "bonus" characters.

I'm really disappointed SC4 has both.

That aside, I love SCIV.

Easy Method 1. Like virtually every other opponent in Arcade Mode, the Apprentice is very susceptible to throws. Just block a combo string, then throw him. Every now and then he'll actually escape one, and he might even spend a full round getting out of all throws, but if you keep at it you can take him down.

Easy Method 2. Pick Astaroth. If the Apprentice is nearby, use 1A. If you have some distance or he's on the ground use 1[A],A. The AI doesn't know how to deal with this combo, so you can repeat it until he dies.

Advanced Method 1. Get up to the Apprentice, hold down the guard button, and then just watch what he does for a couple rounds. Watch how he attacks, where he attacks, and the patterns he uses. You'll notice the AI only brings about a dozen moves/combos to the table. Here's some stuff to look out for:

1. Two horizontal swipes and a downward vertical slash. He likes it because it's fast, and there's a slight delay for the third vertical hit. Wait for the combo to finish before retaliating otherwise you'll bite the last attack.

2. Low sweep, and then he rises and impales with the light saber. The impale frequently misses.

3. A horizontal swipe, and he slams the ground and sends Force "fire" your way. The fire has to be blocked low. This is easily the most difficult move of his to deal with.

4. He jabs with the lightsaber off, jabs with the lightsaber on, and then kicks. Again, there's a slight delay between the second and third hit. Wait for the kick or you'll eat it. (There's a longer version with 3 punches preceeding this combo.)

5. He'll jump up in the air and throw lightning down. Relax. That lightning can be blocked.

6. A sommersault kick with a lightsaber slash. It's a little harder to guard impact because he's in motion before the attack actually strikes.

7. An uppercut, then he slams the ground with a big blue ball of Force. It looks like he's vulnerable after the uppercut, but he's not. Wait for the big-blue explosion on the ground.

8. He'll do a flip-kick and then throw his lightsaber.

9. A quick force grab that does nothing but just stagger you. More irritating than effective.

You'll also notice the AI has no regard for the force meter and will rip through it. He might seem devestating while unleashing (no pun) all these force attacks; however, once his force meter runs dry he's a sitting duck.

Another thing you'll notice is that he is overly defensive (ie, he guards way too much.) Namco introduced a new game element just for this: Soul Crush and Critical Finish. When you get more experience with the game, you'll find the AI Apprentice in Arcade Mode is the easiest character to get Critical Finishes against.

Yet another thing you'll notice: he favors sidestepping, so you should favor horizontal attacks (besides, horizontal attacks typically come out faster). Mix up vertical attacks becuase he will start ducking if you're monotonous. However, simple A,A combos repeated over and over can go a long way against the AI.

Advanced Method 1 (alternative). Instead of getting up to the Apprentice and watching what the AI does, you could go into Training Mode and learn the Apprentice's moves, yourself. If you know how to fight with him, you'll be able to see what the AI is doing and formulate an appropriate counter.

Advanced Method 2. Improve your knowledge of the game's fundamentals, your character's moves, and practice, practice, practice. While the Apprentice is the most difficult opponent in Arcade Mode, he's still very very easy to beat.

-I haven't played online yet. I don't even want to.

-The custom character features involve getting your health, attack, and defense either decreasing or increasing. It's a pretty difficult feature, because you could have the highest HP points with the most ugly and messy costuming ever, but some costumes can match evenly.

- think the graphics have improved greatly, and especially with the custom characters as the graphics match with the original characters. Maybe WWE should do that next time.

-Yoda disappoints me against him, but not playing as him. The Apprentice however, is a disappointment both ways. He cheats playing against him, and you don't do much playing as him.

-Story mode on SC3 wasn't as bad, besides having to fight the same characters on certain stages, but Tira reacts different ways against certain characters in their stories. What I'm saying is that there was a lot more involved in SC3's story mode than SC4.

In Standard Versus and Arcade Mode the stats are irrelevent, so you can cater to your character's appearance without worrying about screwing them over with bad stats.

If you care about appearances AND stats, well, yeah you kinda get screwed.

my complaints about this game are...

some costumes are ugly or unnecessary. Seriously, Kilik's costume doesn't make sense.

Then there's the character looks. The guys look pretty cool especially Astaroth, but the ladies have pretty masculine faces with pretty overly-sexualized costumes.

I don't really like the gameplay as much. A lot of the characters are so much slower and do so much less damage than SC II/III. One of my best characters Astaroth is pretty nerfed too. My favorite move Poseidon's Tide is just gone.

The whole Star Wars thing is alright. I seriously don't like the fact that Apprentice is super fast and uses cheap fast combos, as well as strong force attacks.

Anyway... I still like it... and I'm trying really f_ckin' hard to beat 57-59 in Tower.

Custom tag-teaming Astaroths both with HP Drain got me through those floors.

The AI is retarded against 1[A],A. I forget if 1[A],B worked that high up, but 1[A],A for sure.

I was kinda wary of the panty-exposure. Cassandra and Seong Mi-Na have exposed panties... for no real reason. How can that even happen? Big intricate top... exposed panties. Taki's boobs were upgraded, and Shura's boobs are so massive that they create an error in the graphics where the hilts of her katanas phase in and out of her breasts. Why are those secondary swords even there? She has four swords? She only uses two!

-Cassandra has had that type of outfit since her first appearance.

-I've never liked Seong Mi-Na's second outfits in any game from Soul Calibur up to 4. I definitely don't like this one for the exposure, and also her hair.

-I actually think Taki's look more defined than before. Not bigger either. It actually looks smaller.

-If you want to look at who has the biggest, look at Setsuka. The proof is her Critical Finisher. I still like her though.

the only probelms ive had are the noobs who use Yoda so i cant grab them or the Kilik spammers that do the same move over and over again, but they way i see it, it pushes me to learn how to play most if not all of the fighters so i can do good no matter what gets thrown at me

Newb Yodas can be beaten using ONE combo with any reasonably fast character. Just block an incoming attack, and tap B (the vertical swipe) twice. Repeat until you can CF him.

If said Yoda likes to repeat that move where Yoda lunges forward with his lightsaber (6B), just duck. It will miss, and you can punish. Repember to always punish with a medium/low Vertical.

Versus Kilik, start the round guarding. If Kilik rushes forwards block high, and then block low. Most newb Kiliks start the round with a combo where Kilik swings the staff high, then low. This move is very unsafe, so you have a free hit right there. After that, Newb Kiliks tend to favor vertical attacks, so sidestepping works wonders against them. A slightly more advanced newb Kilik will also know a whole 2 horizontal attacks (6AAA, and the aforementioned 66AA.) Both of which are countered by ducking. After which, he'll be vulnerable to anything remotely fast.

Also, Kilik has a throw that can ring out, so be wary when his back is to the edge of the stage. I believe it's his B throw, so if they're scrubby enough you can run up to them and just spam B all day. They'll try to throw over and over to get the ring out, but if you mash B as fast as you can you will break out of every throw attempt and beat the snot out of him in the process. (*note, this is also true of the Apprentice, Nightmare, and Siegfried who have their backs to the edge of the stage ... they all have B throws that Ring Out which players typically abuse.)
