Yep, as BAD as the critics are saying.

The overall writing and character beats are quite bad and I seriously wonder what Denzel Washington was thinking when he agreed to do this film. This movie perfectly fits the atrocious run that Mark Wahlberg is on adding to the awful string of Contraband, Broken City and Pain & Gain. They took an intriguing concept of two undercover agents working not knowing either is the law and turned it in to a mindless and moronic mess. This thing screams "bad over-the-top film" at every turn. The ending is as dumb as any I’ve seen in years. The two leads exhibit nothing but crazed luck and a genuine lack of intelligence throughout the entire running time. Two points for Denzel's always glorious screen presence, one point for some good one liners and one point for the Paula Patton nude scene. That's all this movie has to offer.

reply

You're mistaken. Although the movie shows us nothing new, it's well put-together and there's good chemistry between the leads. Also, it's getting pretty good reviews. Don't know what you're talking about.

What did you expect it to be? Most action movies are pretty generic.

reply

"Don't know what you're talking about." How about vague and crappy dialogue. A ridiculous plot. Completely unrealistic scenes. One of the worst movies I have seen all year.

reply

I think you forgot something... It's a *beep* action/comedy what the *beep* did you expect ?

reply

It was a good action comedy, better than i expected.

It still opened at number one for all your whining. And it is a good action film. not meant to be Shakespeare as it is adapted from a comic book.

reply

Why is it no one can criticize an action movie without someone pulling the "its not supposed to be a world changing Shakespearian deep movie" card?

reply

Notice how no one ever said that about Die Hard or Terminator 2. A great movie is a great movie, doesn't matter if it's a cartoon, an action flick or grossout comedy. And a piece of crap is a piece of crap.

If T2 and Die Hard came out in 2013 they would be criticized too. We live in cynical and jaded times. And thanks to the boom in internet, ever dick and harry is a critic now.

If you think this movie is piece of crap i doubt you have ever seen an actual 'piece of crap'. But please continue to exaggerate.

reply

Please. This thing isn't even as good as any ten minutes of T2 or Die Hard.

reply

And thanks for missing the point of my post.

reply

No, your point just sucks.

reply

No, the point is valid, you guys are just missing it.

reply

Worst movie of the year. PERIOD!

having reading reviews of this film i cant help thinkin what are people expecting? i think the movie was good yet people are saying its garbage trust me i have seen garbage movies and this aint it, I have a theory, i think theres so many movies being savaged because people just label it "its another rush hour" or another buddy cop movie or just labelling it, people are just seeing too many movies and expecting something spectacular when to be honest its ALL been done before, i enjoyed it i liked wahlberg and washington in this but i guess im one a few, im wondering if people are rating this a 5 or whatever what must they think of those straight to dvd movies with washed up actors, what score would they get ZERO? sayin this is a piece of crap is harsh very harsh any film i'd watch twice gets at least a 7 from me and this is one of those.

Because only an a-hole complains about the plot of a movie adapted from a comic book.

that's the dumbest most ignorant *beep* Ive ever heard. Have you seen the Crow *beep* Yeah the Crow and Batman and Robin are on the SAME LEVEL simply because they're comic book movies...what an idiot statement.

You Suck...now deal with it.

reply

Because people complain and moan about how unintelligent and predictable these movies are... it goes with the territory. You say this movie is cheesy.... I say it's supposed to be cheesy. You say this movie is stupid and has to wit... I say it's an action movie and no one gives 2 eff's about your poetry and Winston Churchillism's.

reply

So your position is: it's cheesy and stupid, but it is supposed to be?

Bad movies have been number one at the box office all the time. Just because they are number one and everyone goes and sees them, doesn't mean that these movies are any good.

reply

and comic book it is. I love seeing these two guys together. it's utterly implausable but who cares. I respect the actors for working with a fairly unknown director and I respect the director for keeping the action moving.

for a buddy movie, i think this worked really well and I'm not a fan of buddy movies but who can resist these two guys together.

reply

I don't think it's bad.

I think it's more of the prototypical in-betweener: it's neither good nor bad, but perfectly unremarkable.

reply

Which is for me the worst thing a movie can be. Not so bad that you can laugh at it, but not so good that you can enjoy it. Just a complete waste of time.

Scoreboard. Will it go down in the pantheon of great films? Absolutely not. It was just good enough to be worth the price of admission and in this season of misses, that is enough.

Really well put together B Action movie which has some Comedy, a little mystery and chemistry. This movie will be forgotten by the time Elysium comes out. This movie has outshown most of the mediocre blockbusters this summer.

This thread proves that movie-goers are so jaded and expect *beep* movies that they now don't care that movies suck and therefore attack the people who hold movies accountable for being so bad.

No one said it had to be Shakespeare but it also shouldn't appear to have been written and directed by a retarded seven year old either.

I wish IMDB had a LIKE button so I could LIKE the OP's comments. Perfectly stated, oohhhhh but wait I must be a 14 year old troll living in my parents basement.

What part was well said? The part where he said that movies HE didn't like sucked, or the part where he said that the movie seemed to be directed by a retarded 7 year old? All your credibility goes out the window once you've proven you can't have an intelligible argument without throwing "suck" and "retarded" around, without giving an explanation.

i enjoyed the movie, a lot!

Honestly, I really enjoyed this movie and I’m a huge Mark & Denzel fan. The banter between them alone was comical.
Not slamming anyone for not liking it, but I would like to know which buddy action/comedy movies you’ve seen that you really liked. Because if you didn’t like this, I would love to watch the movies you have.

reply

Denzel and Mark clearly have their moments, the movie IS exciting, the cast is strong, and the action scenes well-executed. BUT... I still agree with Pie's original thesis, and felt like yes, this became a mindless and moronic mess.

I could see where others might like it, but it was too ridiculous for my taste.

reply

A reply to several of the posts:

Of course it was a mindless and moronic mess. That's why it's so entertaining.

It got a pretty decent rating on Rotten Tomatoes - critics 60%, users 75%. And the imdb rating has gone up from a low 6 to 6.9.

Sure, it's not a scientific poll, but it gives you a general sense of what the public thinks.

RE: "Bad movies have been number one at the box office all the time. Just because they are number one and everyone goes and sees them, doesn't mean that these movies are any good."

If it does well over time at the box office, then there's obviously a significant crowd who thinks otherwise.

"doesn't mean that these movies are any good" - You're just in the minority.
