Die Hard scene

When Denzel's girlfriend was on the phone to Denzel and she was about to be shot and killed, and he was like "tell him I have the money!"
This reminded me SO much of the Die Hard 1 scene where McClaine is saying to Ellis "Tell him I have his detonators!" when Ellis is about to be shot and killed by Gruber.

Anyone else feel this?

reply

The big difference was that Ellis reckoned he could deal/negotiate with Gruber. Deb knew there was nothing left with which to deal and was resigned to death, knowing Papi didn't need her as a bargaining tool any more.🐭

reply

Why not? She had the money. Why kill a person who knows where the money is. Why did she not tell Papi that she had the money?? Is it worth dying for???

reply

I'm going from memory here. The time limit had elapsed and Papi was pretty hard core. She clearly made a choice that her number was up.🐭

reply

It was a very weird choice then, losing her life for ... what actually? It makes no sense.

reply

She knew that Papi would probably not hold up his deal,
she would be constantly used to force Bobby to comply.
She knew that the other factions would still hunt both down.
Also, she clearly "cheated" on him and wanted to run away
with the money. Bobby was lost for her.

Her death would give Bobby a clue to the money and
finding a way to end it all. Which he did.

In "Die Hard" McClane says no such thing. Gruber asks for the detonators and Ellis passes it to John, but he brushes it off and keeps saying "you don't know this people, they're going to kill you. Tell 'em you don't know me. You don't know me. Hans, I just met this guy for the first time tonight, I don't know him, he doesn't know me, but I know you and know what you're capable of. Tell him you don't know me." Ellis says "John, how can you say that after all those years", etc. Gruber points the gun at Ellis, Ellis says "c'mon Hans, this is radio, not tv", Hans asks John for the detonators one last time, John tells him to go fuc# himself, cuts the comm, Hans shoots Ellis.

I'm sorry. Yes I know, I'm a geek, but my point is, the conversation in 2 Guns doesn't remind me at all of that other conversation in Die Hard because they're not alike, not in the slightest. In 2 Guns Bobby is asking the girl to lie to try and buy some time, in Die Hard John is asking Ellis to STOP lying to maybe, MAYBE, save his neck, because there's no way in hell he's going to give back the detonators and have himself, his wife, Ellis and probably every other innocent in the building die because of it.

reply

You are totally correct I couldn't believe how badly the OP recalled that die hard scene. Giving up the detonators was the one thing he wasn't gonna give in that scene haha.
