things we learned from polar strom

When the earth's magnetic shield falles

To turn off you cars and electronic stuff when the storm comes or you will be killed and the stuff fried from the EMP.

If your stuff is off it will still work after the EMP.

That magnetic storms can cause earthquakes.

Magnetic storms wipe out communications and radio signals.

Submarines can go to the deepest part of the ocean.

Fighter jets and military stuff is affected by EMPs.

Magnetic storms cause the oceans to boil.

All you need to do is set of 1 nuclear bomb in the ocean and everything will be ok right after.

A comet impact will mess everything up.

People don't panic when it's the end of the world.

Aren't these types of lists supposed to be funny, usually? Most of these are simply facts.

Which ones??

Some more things we've learned:

Russian submarines have English instruments in case Americans hitch a ride.

Russians are the only ones using Diesel submarines, all American are nuclear powered.

You can electrically charge the cylinders (!) of a car to start the engine.

Submarines have external cameras because you can just about see on the bottom of the ocean.

"To turn off you cars and electronic stuff when the storm comes or you will be killed and the stuff fried from the EMP."
^true. and although you wouldn't die from the EMP, lots of people would from the frying of the electronics nearby and as secondary victims, like passenger jets crashing and killing all aboard.

"If your stuff is off it will still work after the EMP."
^true with a few exceptions.

"That magnetic storms can cause earthquakes."
^I dunno about this one, but it seems possible.

"Magnetic storms wipe out communications and radio signals."
^true

"Submarines can go to the deepest part of the ocean."
^true, although only specially built subs can go to the depths seen in the movie, not the sub they had.

"Fighter jets and military stuff is affected by EMPs."
^partially true. some fighter jets are hardened but the majority of new vehicles, weapons systems, and other equipment being deployed today no longer has an EMP hardening mandate and the military would be in serious trouble if a large EMP burst was set off.

"Magnetic storms cause the oceans to boil."
^not sure, maybe

"All you need to do is set of 1 nuclear bomb in the ocean and everything will be ok right after."
^probably BS.

"A comet impact will mess everything up."
^definitely true

"People dont panic when it's the end of the world."
^I dunno

This movie is so messed up in terms of scientific accuracy it's an insult to human intelligence.

"Russians are the only ones using Diesel submarines, all American are nuclear powered."
The latter is true for US Navy, it has abandoned all diesel subs. But I don't see why a nuclear sub is more vulnerable to EMP than diesel subs, diesel sub uses electric motors too when they're submerged, and they got tons of batteries.

""If your stuff is off it will still work after the EMP."
^true with a few exceptions."
Not true, EMP will induce current in the wires, it will fry the electronics even if they're turned off.

""Submarines can go to the deepest part of the ocean."
^true, although only specially built subs can go to the depths seen in the movie, not the sub they had."
The subs they showed can only submerge a few hundred meters, it's a joke to think it can get to Mariana Trench. And the only time manned DSV reached Mariana Trench is back in the 1960s, that vehicle has since been retired, today there're no manned DSV that can reach that depth.

And how about this one: A submarine can go from west coast of US to Mariana Trench (which is near Japan) in just 2 days.

Well the only part worth replying to is the middle topic (I was arguing a very specific post, not in favor of the movie's factuality so the first is irrelevant and the third we were already clearly in agreement on), and the fact remains that a device with no current will be safer after an EMP burst than one that is running.

I am genuinely confused as to your point, you pretty much said all the same stuff I did :) Just wanted to debate or something?

reply

rofl he quoted you and gave specific reasons as to why you were wrong. you're so far off on the dsv bit, it's not even funny. there hasn't been another successful (as in anyone came back alive) mission into the mariana's trench since the 60s. i know this was already stated but i felt the need to state it again. do you know why we know more about space than we do our oceans? space travel is easier. if anyone could just pop off down to the bottom of the oceans, we wouldn't be finding new species almost daily.

rofl you didn't read the earlier posts. I never said their sub could make it to those depths, in fact I said specifically that it couldn't- I just pointed out that there hav existed subs that could. Which is exactly what he said. Thus why I didn't reply on that point- we were in agreement. Next time, try reading more than one post back.

typo's will get you ridiculed.....most probably true....

You can see magnetic waves at ground level!?

Russian submariners smoke. (no wonder so many of them catch fire)!

You can change the starter motor on an army truck in under 2 minutes with one spanner and no training!

What I learned from "polar strom" is to keep my mixed race daughter hidden from the public until after I die.

Wait ... that's what I learned from Strom Thurmond.
