The Narrator

... added nothing that I could detect to the movie. I think it was a pretentious attempt on the part of Ole Bornedal to add some greater feeling of importance to the film than it actually deserves.🐭

The movie is a black comedy (or a satire). The characters, even the good guys, are caricatures that we shouldn't take too seriously. The story is being presented to us by the filmmaker rather smugly and farcically as a (modern) fable, hence the narrator which adds to a literary feel of the movie. Compare to, for example, Romeo + Julia (1996) ("Two households, both alike in dignity, in Fair Verona where we lay our scene...").

LOL! No, I find that a bit hard and too complimentary. More a cinematic rip-off of Straw Dogs.🐭

I don't mean the plot; I mean the use of the narrator.
