Rinko Kikuchi

It was suposed to be a secret but Spanish filmaker Isabel Coixet told to the press that Rinko Kikuchi is going to star in the upcoming adaptation of "Norwegian Wood". She has been directing the Japanese actress during her last movie "Map of the sounds of Tokyo", so I guess this is true.

It was officially announced in Tokyo today that Rinko Kikuchi will star alongside Kenichi Matsuyama, one of the best young Japanese film/t.v. actors to come around in years (though he is relatively unknown outside of Japan, I think). What's interesting is that the film will be made in Japanese (rather than forcing the Japanese cast to speak English), which makes complete sense, though it will present additional challenges to the non-Japanese speaking director.

Hi, just to confirm, I read this on twitchfilm.net (they got the info from tokyograph):

"Kenichi Matsuyama has been chosen to play the lead as the college student Toru Watanabe, while Rinko Kikuchi plays his emotionally troubled lover Naoko. The story’s heroine, a lively young woman named Midori, will be played by ViVi fashion model Kiko Mizuhara in her very first acting role. “Norwegian Wood” follows Toru’s relationships with these two very different women, as well as his dealing with the death of a friend. Tokyograph"

Kenichi is arguably one of the great young actors of his generation and Rinko has already made a name for herself internationally with Babel and Brothers Bloom and she is cute as a bug’s ear. So while this is excellent news the rub is that Norwegian Wood isn’t scheduled for release until Fall of 2010.

Rinko will fit the role well. Naoko is one troubled soul, just like the character in Babel.

Was hoping that they would make Hard Boiled Wonderland instead of Norwegian Wood.

reply

I was kinda hoping Wong Kar-Wai would make Dance Dance Dance

reply

Hard Boiled Wonderland would be really good. It would take a really great director to create the dichotomy of the worlds.
