[SPOILERS] Why did you like this movie? I hated it.

There was no progress in this film. So at the very beginning the best friend of main character kills himself. What do we learn about the best friend - really nothing. So why we care if he dies - we don't care. Then the best friends girlfriend gets sick - what's wrong with her? We don't know. Is she going to get better? We don't know. Does the main character discuss with real doctor - no he doesn't.

Then meanwhile the main character meets this one guy who is good with women and they discuss about going to pick up women. Do we see any of this action - no we don't. Then later we see the girlfriend of this pick up guy and just a bit later learn that she killed herself - do we care about that? No, since we know practically nothing about her! Then at some point we meet a man trapped in hospital bed - and in the next frame we learn that he died. Do we care about him either? No! We don't even know him.

So why did the main girl did not get over her mental illness - we don't know. Why was she able to kill herself? We don't know that either. After all the events in the film - did the main character grow, change, learn from his experiences - we don't *ffffffffffing* know! We know nothing about the main character before and after the events in the film.

The only interesting part in the film was the interaction between the main character and this annoying sunglass girl. But I felt that everyone else in the film were main characters except the real main character. He was introverted blank character with no edge, goals, passion - the worst kind of character because we don't really care what happened to him since he did not gave us any reason to care about him.

If you reply to this, please do not refer to any books. This is my opinion about the film and by all means, give your perspective but stay within the content of the film.

I actually really liked this film, but now after reading your post i'm not soo sure it was a good film. Dont get me wrong its well filmed, sets are really good, i liked the colours and the atmosphere but it terms of me feeling a connection with the characters and emotion.. well its non existant, which is a shame because i was hoping to feel that connection.

But i guess we dont find out what is wrong with the ill girl, or more about the best friend who kills himself, or the man who dies in hospital because its not important and that the main character himself doesn't know. And to be fair he comes across as a confused person who doesn't know between his left and right. And maybe this is the idea that they were trying to tell us, that the main character himself is lost and doesn't know how to change and learn from his experiences, hence why we dont know.

But what we do know is that he should have changed and should have learnt from his experiences and developled as a person. And we walk away from watching the film asking ourselfs why he didn't. This then gives us a reason to look deep into the film to try and find the answer, and then maybe care about him.

And no i havent read the book so i cant compare.

I have not yet seen the film, but I have read the book. My hope was that the movie might be better than the book. (I know, rarely, if ever happens.) The problem is, that is essentially the book. Sure, it goes into more detail about the characters than what you described happens in the movie, but unfortunately, the author, in my opinion at least, doesn't really go into the characters much, to the point where you can understand their actions. Basically....it was like this and this and this happened, but there is never any explanation why.

Now I am disappointed about watching the movie. :(

Well the only the thing I know after watching this film is that Haruki Murakami must have started taking antidepressants because he hasn't committed suicide yet ;)
