That had partially to do with Venom's actual history, versus this film. He started out bonding with Spider-Man, things didn't go well, and Peter Parker eventually rejected the alien because it was evil. So I guess during the creature's time with Spider-Man, he took on a similar appearance to Spider-Man's suit, and kept it up when he bonded with Peter's biggest non-fan (can't remember his name). Of course, Venom took on his own unique appearance later, but it's obvious the alien first got his looks from Spider-Man and the look evolved to the scary creature it later became.
