Why I Hate Movie Ratings

Guys I just walked out of Venom and I think it is the perfect tread to start this conversation. Now I enjoyed the HELL out of Venom. Is it a good movie? Meh not really, it does have A LOT of problems. Now should I give it a 5/5 star rating because of my enjoyment? Definitely not. Should I think about the movie technicaly and give it a 1/5 star rating? Definitely not. Should it be just an overall sintesys? Therefore me giving it a 3/5 rating maybe? No! Because it doesnt reflect what I think of the film.

Guys. Movie is artistic work. Yes, hollywood productions are moved by money first and foremost, but it still remains an artistic piece.

So let me as you a question. You dont go to the museum and look at a painting and go "Thats a 7/10" right?. Thats just disrespect as far as Im concerned. With movies it should be no different.

Movies should be talked about, discussed. Not rated.

Anyway thats my 2 cents on it. What do you think about it?

I kind of get what you mean, but for me my personal enjoyment is what counts for me and I use that criteria to rate a film, so I can rate venom a 9/10 and I rate the godfather a 5/10.

And ratings can be helpful if you’re looking for new things to watch that have some potential that you might like it, you probably have done that before. So you use ratings as well.

I think the way rotten tomatoes work is fair. Its basically an agregate that says if the amount of people that gave it a thumbs up is greater or shorter than the people who gave it a thumbs down. Yes its good that we can have a rotten tomatoes and metacritic score so we can have an idea of the quality of the film before spending our money on it.

But I myself say I actually feel kinda bad for giving the movie a rating. There is a critic who once gave a film 1/10 star rating but on his actual review he said wonderful things about the film. That was his way of kinda protesting against this wave of people who dont read reviews and instead only look at the rating and decide by that.

I think especially in Venoms case this is important, to watch and read the reviews. People like it for very different reasons and dislike it for very different reasons as well.

Hmm..I thought that this was about the MPAA. I give this a 10, out of 10.

I don't trust ratings as shown in newspapers etc but I find I'm usually within a point or so of the IMDB average when I rate a film. Given the number of idiots who give either 1 or 10 to prove a point I find that interesting. I try to be consistent in my approach which is basically a balance between how good I think it is and how much I enjoyed it.
Sometimes I really like a dumb bad film, sometimes I appreciate a film I didn't particularly enjoy and will never watch again. Either way, it seems to work out so some ratings can be a useful guide.
